Pennsic 37 (2008)

Eppingers Closed!!!

Eppingers, a long-time favorite eatery for Pennsic folk, closed its doors for the final time sometime shortly after Pennsic last year.

Eppingers was a Pennsic favorite for its close vicinity to Coopers Lake and its 24-hour service. According to local residents, the restaurant was hit by the hard economic times and was unable to continue in business.

Heirusalem and Flora Eat Out: Johnson Sisters'

Once again, PI Publisher Despotissa Heirusalem Crystoma is on the road to Pennsic and dining at various spots near Cooper’s Lake on the way.

This year, Heirusalem’s daughter, Flora, is traveling with her. We miss Cally and her astute observations of the local cuisine. Therefore, we’d like to dedicate these new reviews to her.

Today, Heirusalem and Flora ate at one of Heirusalem’s favorite spots, Johnson Sisters' Café.

Johnson Sisters' is just west of Cooper’s Lake on 422 West. It is on the south side of the road. In previous years, the sign was hard to see because of trees and other signs. It is much more visible this year. The café is a homey little place, reminiscent of the Kopper Kettle that we all miss so much. The décor is homey, too. You will never get the same plate or cup twice! There is AC, but it works best in the dining room. The counter is the smoking area, and the separate dining room is non-smoking.

Food: Home-style, home-cooked meals. This isn’t your average truck-stop food. Everything you eat at Johnson Sisters' is cooked at Johnson Sisters'. The most fabulous items are the baked items, made at the restaurant. Heirusalem’s favorite of these baked goods is the apple dumpling. If you order one, be prepared to share. It is as big as a Duke’s head! They also have the very unique and delicious cantaloupe pie. This is something everyone should try! The coleslaw is amazing, too. Made from purple cabbage, it is sweet and creamy.

Heirusalem’s favorite breakfast: The pancakes. Be prepared to take some of it home with you unless you have a huge appetite! Served with maple syrup. Best with the link sausage.

Flora’s favorite breakfast: The French toast. It’s yummy!

We’ll be back with comments about the lunch and dinner. Flora hasn’t had a chance to try those yet.

Heirusalem and Flora had dinner at Johnson Sisters' tonight. It was a real treat! We met up with Jim from Jim's Self Storage (it is his favorite place, too) and got to chat with him and with Allison (one of the Sisters) for a bit.

First, the food. Heirusalem had the meatloaf dinner. Lots of homemade gravy over the meatloaf and mashed potatoes (good news for those trying to get Aitch to gain weight!), and a side of the wonderful cole slaw. The meatloaf was tender and not overly spiced. It wasn't served with ketchup, either. It was filling, excellent comfort food.

Flora had the all-you-can-eat spaghetti. One plate was more than enough to fill her up. She enjoyed it, but enjoyed Heirusalem's meatloaf more. :) For dessert, Aitch and Flora took home a piece of apple pie and an apple dumpling. They enjoyed those as a late-night snack back at the hotel.

Stuff they learned: One plate of spaghetti is enough to fill a fighter, probably. Allison told a bit more about the restaurant, too. Original sister Adrienne is still at the store. Now her daughters, including Allison and sisters Erin and Lauren, are helping run the place. Allison's daughter, Ashliegh, is also helping with the restaurant. Erin does most of the baking. She's become famous locally for the apple dumplings. Erin also came up with the recipe for the cole slaw. Sister Lauren created the cantaloupe pie. Allison described the cantaloupe pie as being cool, smooth, and creamy for a hot day, but not too heavy. It has a light, unique flavor that everyone should try.

The sisters plan to have daily specials just for SCA folk during War Week. It is a wonderful place to go no matter what day you make your town run or plan to arrive or leave!

OG Has Returned!

We just wanted to update folks so they don't worry. OG came home yesterday and is being pampered in his camp by many loving people. His job for the rest of Pennsic is to drink water, sit in his throne (either at the camp or at PI) with his leg up, and talk to people.

There is much more to this story. Many details and (hopefully) photos tomorrow!

East Sweeps Over the Bridge Battle

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter,
Pennsic Independent
DonalBane’s Unofficial War Points: Midrealm Dragons 15, East Tygers 12

The two grand armies of the Dragon and the Tyger returned to the field Thursday for the Bridge battle. This year, the battle included three fights over five bridges, with each fight worth one War Point.
The Midrealm deployed its forces on the east side of the field. Æthelmearc, the Tuchux, South Oaken, and Constellation were sent to the left flanks; the Huskarls, Midlands, and Petamere went to the center; Ealdormere, the Great Dark Horde, Calontir ,and Outlands were sent to the right; while North Oaken and the western allies were held in reserve.
The East deployed from the west side of the field, sending the Southern army, Atlantia, and Black Talon to the right; Duchy von Drachenklaue and the Northern Army went to the center; and the Ulsterblichen and Northfield were sent to the north.
The first fight was a fairly static affair, as the East seemed reluctant to engage unnecessarily, given their lesser numbers. As a result, the Midrelam’s forces seized the center of all five bridges and held them just out of spear range from the East.
The biggest push from the East came on the south bridge, as Black Talon and House Serpentius slowly ground down the Æthelmearc forces. When the cannon sounded after 30 minutes, the East’s forces held the southern bridges, but the Midrealm held the other four bridges despite being pushed. The Dragon claimed the first fight.
Things in fights two and three were much more dynamic. The East switched Atlantia to the southern bridge, and the result was a breakout both times.
In fight two, Atlantia held its forces back for about 15 minutes before beginning a huge push against the Æthelmearcians. Bodies on the southern bridge were piled three- and four-deep when the holds were called. When the action resumed, HRM Sinclair of Atlantia led his forces through a breach and up the field. As soon as the breach took place, Eastern forces pushed on every bridge, sweeping the Dragon before them. In the end, House Darkmoon was the last Midrealm force left standing on the center bridge before getting squeezed from both sides.
Fight three included combat archery and siege weapons, which the Atlantians took full advantage of. The battle on the south bridge was an archer’s delight as many gentles fell to well-placed shots.
Again, the Æthelmearcians were pushed back and only were able to hold the bridge with help from Constellation. However, when Constellation committed itself, Northshield pushed on the south-central bridge and eradicated the Midrealm’s forces.
The final push was so quick in coming, the Northern Oaken Army was still in its reserve position when East forces surrounded it on all sides. The Oaken boys put up a heroic fight, but ultimately fell.
Jubilant East forces were elated with victory as cries of “Konrad! Konrad!” rang out as the Tyger King visited and complemented each of his forces.
Friday’s Big Battle: The Field Battle
And now, my lords and ladies, it’s time for the main event. There will be five battles this year, with standard last-man-standing rules for fights one, two, four and five. Combat archery and siege weapon are allowed in the last two fights. Fight three, meanwhile, will be a “regicide”: affair: the side which is able to kill the king of the East or Midrealm will win.
What to watch for: The first charge. Anyone whose heart doesn’t race during the first charge has no pulse.

Thursday Battlefield Report

Belted Champions Battle
After the Bridge battles were completed, the East and Midrealm met again on the field for the Belted Champions battle. As usual, this battle included 20 champion knights from both kingdoms.
The fight was quick and rugged affair, but the Tyger’s forces were able to stick together better and roll over the field.
Unbelted Champions Battle
Just after the Belted Champions, the Unbelted Champions of the East and Midrealm came together for their 40-on-40 fight.
Having seen their belted brethren fall, the Midrealm’s forces came out with steely resolve and they showed it on the battlefield. The Dragon’s forces rolled over the field with minimal casualties and ground the East down.
As has become tradition, Captain Gunner, head of the Midrealm unbelts, was given a sword in friendship by his Eastern counterparts. Gunner was later put on vigil for knighthood.
Allied Champions Battle
One the toughest and best fights of the war, the Allied Champions battle took place Thursday about 30 minutes after the other champions’ battles. The battle was an SCA-style game of capture the flag with resurrections allowed in two-minute intervals. The side that captured the other squad’s flag seven times—or had the most captures in 60 minutes —would earn the War Point.
The fight was a rollicking affair with battle lines wavering all over the field. Several times, a warrior seized a flag only to be tripped by the turf monster. There was also one occasion where each side grabbed the other’s flag at the same time, negating any scoring.
After splitting the first four captures, the East’s allies took a 4-2 lead, and were able to hang on for a 4-3 win at the end of the hour.

Thursday Rapier Report

By Grizzly of Ironstar
Marshall Reporter, the Pennsic Independent

Battle of Tortuga
Thursday afternoon (with sword and musket), pirates attacked at the Main Rapier List. Two groups of merchants and a group of pirates went at it ship-to-ship. Across four planks, the pirates rushed the merchants. With unlimited resurrection compared to the merchant’s one resurrection, the pirates had the upper hand. The rapier fighters rotated after each fight so everyone had a turn at being a pirate. Even today’s rain couldn’t dampen the fighters spirits and ruin their fun.
Æthelmarc Known World Ladies’

Treasure Chest Tournament
Twenty-six female rapier fighters competed Thursday for a treasure trove of prizes. Prizes were donated by supporters, with the first place prize being a rapier helmet donated by Marco of Marco & Krieger Armory. Second place, age permitting, was a bottle of twelve year-old scotch. As for the rest of the treasure, the ladies were allowed to pick and choose their own prizes. This was the fifth year for the tournament to be hosted by Illadore de Bedegrayno. This will also be her last year running the event as her work has taken her to the West Coast, making it more difficult to make the journey to war every year. “It’s time for some else to take over and hopefully run the tournament for another five years.”
The final bout in today’s tournament came down to Annora Raines of the West and Amanita Villarosa for the Middle. In the first few moments of the round Annora took Amanita’s off hand, then in an act of courtesy and chivalry threw down her off hand weapon and finished Amanita with a double kill. The second pass began the same way with Annora taking Amanita’s off hand and throwing down her off hand weapon again. Finally Annora took Amanita’s weapon hand for the win. This is the first Pennsic for the winner of Thursday’s tournament, Annora Rains. She was overcome with joy as she accepted the rapier helmet from Illadore. “It’s been an honor fighting with all of you, this is my first Pennsic and you’ve made it amazing.”

And the Air is Just Right For Drinking

By Grizzly of Ironstar
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

Pennsic is war and war is well...Pennsic isn't all about fighting, though. I know that we all know this. There's A&S, there's shopping and spending time with good friends and a fine drink.
I've often had friends stop me to tell me, "You have to try this"-some new beer or wine that they just discovered, one of a kind and you can't get it here. It's their special treasure and they want to share it with you! I know you've had this happen to you at one time or another.
Some people in the SCA take that a step farther and actually make their own wines, beer and cordials. Every year at Pennsic, the Interkingdom Brewers' Guild hosts the annual Brewers' Guild Competition. The name is misleading. Brewers are not judged against each other; the beverages are judged on their quality.
The purpose of the competition is not to pick out everything that is wrong with the beverage, but to point out what the brewer did right and how to improve their brewing skills. It's also a good way to find out who makes good beer and where they camp.
There are three different categories of brewing: cordials, wines and meads, and beer. Using several different criteria, the judges score the beverage on a scale of 1-10. First they look at the brewer's documentation, most importantly recipe and ingredients. Then they look at the presentation, the bottle, the label and the clarity. Upon opening the bottle they sample the aroma, look at how the beverage moves in the glass, and finally check the taste.
What really makes brewing stand out from other A&S competitions is the fact that as the judges are doing all this, the brewer is sitting at the table with them. In this manner they can see the process and witness first hand the judges' reactions and comments. The judges are very helpful with identifying what didn't go right with a beverage, explaining why the brew turned out as it did, and offering tips on how to improve it next time.
If you'd like to join the brewer's guild, it's as simple as making the brew of your choice and bringing it to the competition. For information on how to get started, you can go to www.greydragon.org/ikbg. Or contact master brewer Rhys Terafan Greydragon at terafan@greydragon.org.
Just remember, the reasons for these events are to help each other to become better brewers, to spend time with good friends, and to drink finer and finer brews.

PEACE Has Broken Out!

The populace of the Known World assembled in front of the Fort Sunday to officially open the Pennsic War, but a twist at the end of the Opening Ceremony has put a whole new spin on Pennsic XXXVII.
The Kingdom of AEthelmearc and the Great Dark Horde were first on the scene on a beautiful morning. The host kingdom took their accustomed place on the dais about 20 minutes before the belligerent nations arrived.
When the East and the Midrealm arrived, HRM Khalek told his subjects to welcome their guests in song. "AEthelmearc, AEthelmearc" rang out as the Tiger and Dragon marched to the dais, followed by representatives from every kingdom in the Known World.
When the populace had assembled, HRM Khalek addressed the crowd.
"We greet you and thank you for coming to our lands," HRM Khalek. "The skies are pleased and they have given us a glorious day."
HRM Khalek then said he had heard rumor that "an aggressive army" had come to his land. HRM Konrad of the East replied he had heard the same rumor and brought the Eastern forces with him for that reason.
"I seek to come here and aid you," HRM Konrad said.
HRM Khalek accepted the offer, but was quick to note the East had brought its army to AEthelmearc "without permission."
HRM Lutr of the Midrealm then made the same offer of protection.
"There is an aggressive army here," HRM Lutr said. "I believe AEthelmearc has earned the right to remain an independent nation and will help fight to maintain that."
HRM Khalek accepted Lutr's offer, noting the Midrealm did have permission to bring its army.
"I think there is to be a contest here," HRM Khalek said.
"I look forward to a contest between warriors on this field," HRM Konrad said.
The three kings then called for the War Arrow and broke it together, setting off cheers from the crowd and cannons in the background.
The Dragon and Brigantia Heralds then took turns calling off the roll of Kingdoms.
HRM Khalek confirmed the host nation would fight with the Midrealm. The kingdoms of the West, Caid, Ansteorra, Trimaris, Lochac and Ealdormere also declared for the Midrealm. Calontir declared themselves to follow their allies in Ansteorra and Outlands declared with Calontir, so both kingdoms will fight with the Dragon.
HRM Sinclair of Atlantia boldly declared for the East saying, "Much like Beowulf, I have brought the army of Atlantia to slay a dragon!"
Atenveldt, An Tir, Artemisia, Drachenwald and Gleann Abhann all declared for the East, as did Northshield, HRM Lars noted he would have never made it through many a Pennsic without HRM Konrad, who was his squire brother. King Richard from the Holy Kingdom of Acre also declared for the East.
The Great Dark Horde then came forth, with Khan Omar at the head. Omar pleaded with Their Majesties to resolve their differences via diplomacy or single combat. When those pleas failed, Omar summoned the host of Horde to the dais. He then offered an arrow to both Lutr and Konrad, declaring his field forces and siege engines would fight for the Midrealm, while his target arrow archers would shoot for the East.
With all declared, the Darkyard Legion brought forth the Pennsic war horn, which was picked up by HRM Konrad.
"This horn is a beautiful work of art," Konrad said. "I would not dishonor it by not blowing it properly."
HRM Lutr then suggested Master Rocco Barbarossa of Darkyard as a proper man to blow the horn. Rocco ascended to the dais and gave a long, high blast.
HRM Khalek then addressed the populace.
"The words have been spoken; the horn has been blown; here we have war!" Khalek said, before telling the populace to prepare itself.
However, HRM Konrad then said he had one more thing to say. He noted since AEthelmearc would not accept his help, he would feel aggrieved to fight against them.
Therefore, Konrad offered to concede all 37 War Points to the Midrealm, declaring, "I do not wish to shed the blood of people I hold in such high esteem."
After a moment HRM Lutr accepted Konrad's offer.
"I guess we have--no war!" Lutr said, to the laughter of the crowd. "We will be able to enjoy all that is offered here on this field."
TRMs Konrad and Khalek then embraced before the sovereigns of the Known World left the dais.

Combat of the Thirty
After the completion of Opening Ceremonies, about 50 gentles assembled on the green list field for the fourth annual Combat of the Thirty. The combat is meant recreate the original Combat of the Thirty, fought between 30 English knights and 30 French Knights during the Hundred Years' War.
Each combatant had to offer a ransom to be eligible to come back for next year's fight. The combat was held to period conditions, meaning three solid blows to the head stunned a combatant, allowing him to be captured. Thrusts to an open-face helm or a vulnerable or unarmored area registered as kills.
Sir Nigel MacFarland of Ealdormere captained the French, while Sir Johannes von Bruckenheim of Atenveldt captained the English.
Amid cries of "St. George!" the English rolled to victory in two straight fights, reversing the historical outcome of the battle for the first time.
After the fight, the combatants declared themselves so pleased with the combat that Sir Nigel and Sir Johannes will serve as captains for the next two years.

Ealdormere 10-Man Unbelted
Champions Tournament
Ealdormere hosted one the most rollicking tournaments of the first weekend of war, its annual 10-Man Unbelted Champions Tournament, on the main battlefield Sunday.
Seven kingdoms brought forward teams for the round-robin rumble. The scores after the round robin were: AEthelmearc 5-1, Atlantia 5-1, Midrealm 4-2, Northshield 3-3, Calontir 3-3, Ealdormere 1-5 and Atenvedlt 0-6.
With AEthelmearc and Atlantia tied for the lead after the round robin, the two kingdoms' teams met one last time to settle the title. In a quick fight, AEthelmearc's forces were able to maintain their cohesion and roll over Atlantia for the win.

Known World Novice Tournament
(Editor's note: This tournament was completed after deadline on Saturday.)
The Chivalry of the Known World hosted the Known World Novice Tournament Saturday. The event attracted 53 fighters with less than two years of experience in SCA adult and/or youth fighting.
The tournament format was a shark pool.
The two finalists were Joseph of Serpentius from the East and Lucas from Atlantia. Lucas won the final in a best-two-of-three format.

Advice for the Middle-Aged

When you're as old as I am, and although I'd like to say I'm older than dirt I don't really know where some of this dirt has been so I'd be reluctant to speak on its behalf, you tend to overlook some of the things you took for granted when you were young. You start not noticing some of the things about yourself that you don't really want to notice. You don't notice that when you look in the mirror that the six-pack abs that once adorned your frame have turned into something between a bubba and a keg. You don't notice that when you're ogling those pretty dancers that they might not be laughing with you. You will notice that your wife will still smack you. Those are mostly unavoidable.

Another thing you don't notice are the bizarre things that happen to yourself. If you keep getting headaches when you're setting up camp or out there on the main battlefield, it might not be because your campmates are just watching you work or because guys in blue tape are repeatedly smacking you in the head with blunt objects. You really need to watch your water intake, particularly if you don't normally get off your couch much or live in climates like I do which are more amenable to cross-country skiing and ice fishing than cooking the camp breakfast on your new armor. You never know when the great curse of Pennsic will strike. No, I'm not talking about the little blonde in the next camp who smiled at you. Remember what I wrote earlier. The great curse is dehydration. Please, make sure you're drinking something out of your water cooler and not always out of your beer cooler. The beer can wait.

A few days ago one of my best friends went down with the heat pretty bad, bad enough that he ended up in the hospital. When you're at Pennsic, you need to be spending your time at Pennsic, not down the road at the hospital. You can't see the dancers from Butler Memorial. And isn't that why we're all here in the first place?

Remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together.

Pennsic Rallies for a Legend

By Grizzly

Reporter, the Pennsic Independent

Thursday evening Og returned to Pennsic to dozens of well-wishers, cheering his name "Og! Og! Og!", waiting to present him with his brand new yurt.

Early in the first week of Pennsic, Og was force to leave due to a sudden illness. While he was recuperating, his campmate Stitch and "brother" Wolfgang of the MacPharlain Clan, hoping to cheer him up, decided to help him out by cleaning and straightening up Og's tent. Upon closer inspection of his abode they found that it had seen better days, and since it had a broken zipper and leaky roof, the only option was a new tent. With no new tents to be found, they spoke to Lord Valadar of Sparrowhawk from Great American Yurts, to see how much a yurt might cost. When he heard it was for Og, Valadar told them he was willing to make a special deal, half price, $800 for a brand new yurt.

Stitch and Wolfgang decided to take up a collection, passing the hat, or in this case Og's Helmet. As he walked through camp with Og's helmet and club, Wolfgang said, "the true spirit of Pennsic came out." Everyone wanted to donate; children chased them down to throw pennies in the hat for Og even after their parents had already put in money. StitchÕs son Dragon and his friends stood on Beggars' Row giving hugs in exchange for donations for Og. Several people went around collecting for the cause.

While they initially only hoped to get some portion of the cost of the yurt deferred by donations, Stitch and Wolfgang found that within a few hours they had collected in excess of $1200, more than enough for the yurt, and money was still coming. In the end they had collected over $1500, enough for the yurt, a new bed, a door and shelves. The money that was left over was presented to Og to help offset his medical expenses.

The walls of the yurt were taken to locations around Pennsic for people to sign. The top portion, the "wheel," was brought to the Pennsic Independent for the staff to sign.

When his friends learned that Og would return Thursday evening, there was a mad dash to get the tent set up, the bed made, and all of his belongings organized and placed inside before his return. Pennsic Independent staff artist Muirne painted a plaque with Og's face on it for his door. The final touch was to place Og's own plaque reading, "Relinquite spem omnes qui hic intratis," [sic] on the threshold.

As the work was being finished, word came that he was on his way. People began wandering in to Og's camp about that time, wanting to be there to welcome him home. More and more showed up, and it wasn't long before there were several dozen people crowded into the camps common tent waiting to welcome Og.

As the car came in to view, Wolfgang stepped onto the road, holding Og's club high and, with everyone joining in, he chanted, "Og!Og!Og!"
Og's face was aglow with a big smile as he walked up and saw his new tent. His helmet filled with get-well cards was presented to him. He gratefully accepted his gifts and, overcome with emotion, announced he wanted to thank everyone for what they had done.

Stitch and Wolfgang added, "God bless the people of Pennsic! We can't thank you enough!"

The Warhorns of Summer are Blasting Again

By DonalBane of Blakmers

Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

Greetings once again to all my fellow SCA warrior watchers and the warriors who keep us entertained and enthralled at these great Pennsic Wars!

With the majority of the brawling throng still finding its way onto site, I thought it might be a good idea to review "what's up" on this year's Pennsic Battlefield schedule.

Change is a constant on the battlefield schedule from year to year and this year is no different.
If there's a catchphrase for this year's schedule, it would be "Fight all you want, we'll have more battles."

In honor of Pennsic War XXXVII, the number of War Points this year is 37. That's the biggest number of War Points in Pennsic history, nearly double last year's total (21).

What's more, that number is weighted toward mass heavy battles.

Three Points will be offered to the rapier fighters, including the rapier champions, while the traditional four Points will be given to archery and four more Points are allotted for heavy fighting champions' battles.

That leaves a whopping 26 points to be decided in six mass battles. Any fighter who leaves Pennsic this year claiming he didn't get enough stick time has no one but himself to blame.

Let's break it down battle-by-battle. There are some new fights and some twists on some old battles which should make things very interesting this year.Remember, although these battles are listed on the official battlefield schedule, all battle times are approximate and subject to change:

* Gates of Rome Battle @ 10 a.m. Monday Aug. 4 (5 points) -> The newest "concept" battle at Pennsic, this will be a 60-minute, unlimited resurrection affair fought over five gates in the "Aurelian Wall" around Rome. The wall will run diagonally across the main battlefield at Pennsic and a banner will be at each of the five gates. Control of each banner will be worth one War Point at the end of the battle. By the way, combat archery and siege weapons are allowed. This should be a fun.

* Woods Battle @ 11 a.m. Tuesday Aug. 5 (5 points) -> The Pennsic original returns with simplified rules this year: 120 minutes of unlimited resurrection warfare; five banners to fight over; control of each banner at the end of the fight awards one War Point. It's still impossible to watch, but it's still a lot of fun to fight, so they tell me.

* Town Battle @ 10 a.m. Wednesday Aug. 6 (5 points) -> A 90-minute unlimited resurrection fight, this battle will be fought over five flags stashed throughout the town. Marshals will check who "owns" each flag every 15 minutes, with majority ownership of each flag earning a War Point. I smell a tactical affair.

* Mountain Pass Battle @ 2 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 6 (3 points) -> That's right; two mass battles in one day.
This will be a one-hour, unlimited resurrection affair will be fought over three banners, with control of each banner at the end earned a War Point. Be aware, this is the battle where the combat archers and siege engineers like to play and ballista bolts don't care where or not a spectator wears armor.

* Bridge Battle @ 10 a.m. Thursday Aug. 6 (3 points) -> I admit this is my favorite battle to watch because it can be so tactical. There will be three fights over five bridges. Whichever side controls the center of the bridges after 30 minutes (or rolls over the field) will claim a War Point after each fight.

* Field Battle @ 10 a.m. Friday Aug. 7 (5 points) -> The main event takes its place as the last big War Points fight with five individual battles, each worth one War Point. The first two fights will be last-man-standing brawls with only hand-held weapons, while fights four and five will allow for combat archery and siege weapons. The third fight however, will be the most unique. In this battle, TRMs Konrad and Lutr will each take the field with a banner-bearer. The object of this fight will be to kill the opposition king and force him to retire his banner before the enemy does the same to yours. (Video game fans will recognize this as a "regicide" game Ð only this one is live action!)

There are the big battles of the week in a nutshell. It's going to be a long, fun War.

Midrealm, East Share Spoils on the Field

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

DonalBane’s unofficial War Points: Midrealm 16, East 13, Mid-East Coalition 3, Allied Kingdoms 0 (one tie – phew!)

The Grand Armies of the Dragon and Tyger met for the final time at Pennsic XXXVII in the Field Battle Friday. This year, there were five last-man-standing fights, although — as has become customary at this Pennsic —there were a few twists along the way.
The East’s forces lined up on the west side of the field, looking to score victory. Atlantia, Ironlance and the Ulsterblichen were sent north to start the day, with the bulk of the East army and the western allies to the south and only a small force of mercenaries in the center.
The Midrealm lined up on the east side of the field, sending Æthelmearc and the Tuchux north, the whole of the Midrealm army in the center and Ealdormere, Calontir and the other allied kingdoms to the south.
The first fight saw the East make no attempt to defend the center of the field; everything was thrown into a double flanking maneuver and the strategy worked. Despite the Tuchux doing a complete circle around the battlefield, the East forces stuck together a bit better during this annihilation battle. About 50 warriors were all that was left on the field after a final hold was called, but the East’s forces overran the Huskarls, giving the East victory in the first fight.
Thirsty for victory, the Dragon’s forces brought a bit more aggression into the second fight. The Midrealm army thwarted the East’s flanking attempts by throwing everything they had at both flanking forces. When the dust cleared, few warriors from either side were alive, but the Tuchux had held themselves in reserve at the top of the field after sweeping Black Talon off of it. The Tuchux then joined the remnant of the Æthelmearcian army in a pincer movement towards the center, which crusted the remaining East forces.
The third fight was a “regicide” battle where the object was to be the first to kill the king of the Midrealm or the East. However, before the fight, the Tyger and Dragon saw most of the allied kingdoms abandon them and form their own army on the north of the battlefield. HRM Anton of Calontir agreed to carry the banner for the allies, turning the regicide fight into a three-way dance.
The Midrealm attacked from the southeast corner and the East from the southwest. It was clear both kingdoms were annoyed with the rebellion and sent almost all of their forces against the allies. HRM Anton shifted to the northeast corner of the battlefield, where forces from Calontir and Ironlance surrounded him.
However, the strategy backfired. The Midrealm’s forces, aided by the Tuchux, put the Atlantian army to the sword, while the East focused all of its forces on the northeast corner. HRM Anton’s fate was sealed by wave after wave of coalition forces and he was eventually slain.
After a hold, it looked like TRM Lutr and Konrad were spoiling for a fight. With Lutr surrounded by the Huskarls and Konrad surrounded by the Ulsterblichen, the forces charged headlong into each other … and then hugged each other to signify the end of the battle.
Furious at the collusion of the belligerent nations, the allied kingdoms reformed on the north side of the battlefield. This time, the East and Midrealm did not find their intentions as Dragon and Tyger lined up on the south of the field together. The fight that followed was quick and brutal as the coalition forces turned the right flank of the allies. In the end, houses Serpentius and Darkmoon were seen destroying the last remnants of the Atlantian army.
The final fight pitted the allies and the Middle-East coalition against each other again, but the allies had no better luck. Despite the Midrealm loaning the Northern Oaken army to the allies, the coalition rolled over the field, ending the final heavy battle of Pennsic in victory.

Saturday’s Big Battle: The flight of dragons through the gate!
As always, VIVAT, HOOBAH, HUZZAH and WASSAIL to all my warrior friends and fellow warrior watchers. May we all meet again on these same fields for Pennsic XXXVIII.

Pennsic Memories

By Jack Marvell
Feature Reporter, Pennsic Independent
With the drums of War fallen into silence, many members of the populace begin their long journeys homeward today. For them, the memories of Pennsic XXXVII will shine ever brighter as the days pass.
The Pennsic Independent took to the streets to ask the populace what were their best memories of the War.
“My best memory of the War was having the Queen of Gleann Abhann make me a citizen (of her kingdom),” said Safiya Bint Hakim Al-Khwarizmi, her eyes shining with emotion. “I feel very at home in the encampment”
Another lady, Anlaith Ingentrena, talked about the excitement of the town battle. “I would have to say my best Pennsic memory this year was being in the Town Battle,” she said. “I was really wild. I had lot of fun, lots of adrenaline. It has been a very good experience.”
Count Sir Duncan von Halstern said he has good family memories.
“We’re here with our two kids,” he said. “Just sharing Pennsic with my children, that’s something that’s going to stick with me for a while.”
When asked about his best memory early Friday morning, Fionn of Dun na Ngal looked to the future instead of the past.
“I’m about to have one,” he said. “It’s always when the women in white march of my clan from the bog.”
Each Pennsic for about the last 10 years, the women of Clanne Preachain lead their warriors to the field battle. They are dressed in white, carrying swords and spears. They chant and sing and exhort the warriors to victory, Fionn said
Sean, Fionn’s son, has his own best memories.
“Eating burgers and going crazy for no reason and wearing my socks around camp,” he said.
Flora, daughter of the Pennsic Independent’s publisher, Despôtissa Heirusalem Crystoma, enjoyed some time spent with the Dragon Herald of the Midrealm, Master Dafydd Blaid.
“I would have to say dancing with Taffy,” she said.
Encountered in the dubious company of the highly-esteemed OG, Stitch, a lady dressed in the pirate fashion, said her best memory was “getting him his yurt.”
“It surprised the hell out of me,” OG said
“Yes, it did, and that was the beautiful thing,” Stitch said.
For Catlin Svensdottir, the best memory was music.
“Playing my harp on Runestone Hill while being accompanied on guitar by a campmate,” she said. “We played ‘Greensleeves’. What better place to play harp? It is the most Pennsic-y place we know.

Permanent Rune Stone To Be Erected

By Mistress Tirza bithe Reaboughes,
O.P., O.M., S.F., Q.O.C.

Baron David Cooper has given his most gracious, exuberant approval to the erection of an 8’ memorial stone for the family and friends that have passed on. Lord Valdis of Gotland, of the East Kingdom, an established bone and wood carver, is heading the project. The design will be finalized after the 10 ton stone is aquired from a local quarry; however. It will be in the style of Scandinavian 1-14th century memorial stones with a rune inscription. Once the design is laid out on the stone, Lord Valdis will NOT be carving it. The people of Pennsic are invited to come together and participate in this phase, to work out our own sorrow as we work the stone. For Valdis, the inspiration was the loss of Lady Sueeatra, former proprietor of S&M Leathers. Each of us will be welcome to carve in the memory of our own special grief.
In order to accomplish this, Lord Valdis needs two things – good words for the inscription (he hesitates to use his own) and funding. Stone purchases and delivery are estimated to be $1,000, all to be raised by private donation. Checks will be accepted at Booth #64 Shrewwood (where Valdis’ design skill may also be observed) made to: “Cooper’s Lake Memorial Rune Stone.” After war, checks can be mailed to Ken Koll, 44 North Church Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268. The funds will be held in this account until the stone is purchased. Inscription recommendations can be submitted at the booth or emailed to kenkoll8974@hotmail.com. Lord Valdis (Ken Koll) will establish a discussion group on Yahoo for all who contact him to finalize the inscription.

Rune the Runestone

(My master compels me to put pen to papyrus and preserve his thoughts; who is he to think these words so precious? May Allah forgive him his pride and vanity -- Abd al-iblis)
Not so very long ago, two squires sought to be the best Vikings that the Known Worlde would ever see. Thal and Dag were so intent to do this that they would pass notes with the Futhark Runes between them, hoping that the Master would not notice.
All winter and spring they prepared themselves while assisting the Master's work to arm the royal army. When summer had come, they had proven themselves battle worthy; the Master joined them in the caravan to the tenth battle of the Pennsic War.
Once the arms were distributed and the wine of war tasted, they joined the Master in battle against the greatest host the kingdom had ever faced. Though separated from their Master early in the battle, they fought the tide of foes with all the fury of a Dane Bramaged Bersark. So valorous their victory, so grand was that stand that all skalds fear that any tale would pale before the sooth truth.
Once the adversary had been put to rout, Dag and Thal celebrated with mead, song, and fair shield maidens in the Valhalla that is Pennsic. Well, two out of three ain't bad. They watched the Great Kings raise up the worthy and debase the scoundrels in the Great Court of the Renown. Philip the Pilgrim can attest to this.
There before the whole host of the court a graven stone from Calontir (a little known land, which must be as flat at the stones they gave to the Great Kings, or so it is said) was laid at the feet of the Kings. It chronicled the deeds of the two most Famous Viking Squires of the Known World that day done (or so Thal and Dag thought they heard, for the mead made their ears ring, and Calontirish tongues are thick).
When day broke the following morn, and the great piles of loot from the fleeing armies was divided, the Master saw to the preparation of the wain for the journey home. Finding themselves at leisure (and with swollen and sore heads), the two squires sauntered to the crest of the battlefield hill where stood the stone that chronicled their famous fortunes of war. Dag stopped to read the side of the stone facing North, and Thal began reading aloud from the Southern face of the stone.
Though the words of the Northern face were set in the vulgar tongue of Calonstani, Dag could perceive the meaning behind them. Remarkably, the words that Thal spoke aloud were much the same. "The same must be written on that side!" exclaimed the Dark Viking Squire, and as he walked round the stone he saw ***To Be Continued***.

Having seen the words that he had heard Thal speak, he was taken aback when he saw that the words were inscribed on the other side in the Futhark Runes. All of these deeds were witnessed by no less than Philip the Pilgrim, whose worth and wisdom cannot be denied.

Saturday Battlefield Report

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

St. Michael's Vespers Deed of Arm
The Company of St. Michael made a triumphant return to Pennsic Saturday with a Deed of Arms, seeking to replicate authentic fighting conditions in a classic tournament style.
After a class on the subject of deeds of arms, Master Gallaron de Cressy opened the list field to all comers.
Nine gentles answered the call: Baron Angus Tailor, Sir Aengus MacBain, Earl Yngvar the Dismal of Aethelmearc, Baron Sir Manfred Von Halstern, Sir Magariki Katsuicha no Koredono, Lord Erich Hundeman, Lord Simon de Poitier, Lord Henry of Bexley and Lord James Skalli.
The gentles did battle in single and small melee groups, with blows to exposed areas and face thrusts counting for automatic kills. Several bouts were fought with counted blows using short spears, poleaxes and short swords.
The assembled crowd, which included a period band, showed their appreciation.

Second Left-handed Tournament
Things got sinister on the red list Saturday and that was a good thing as the Left-handed Tournament returned after a one year hiatus. Lord Haden and Ysemay Sterling hosted the tournament.
Twenty gentles, including several brave right-handed fighters who switched sides, did battle with sword and shield from the southpaw side. The tournament was a round robin.
Sir Gabriel of Maccuswell from the East claimed victory, while HRH Havordh of Gleann Abhann was runner-up.

"My Mom Can Beat Up Your Mom" Tournament
Claiming the prize for best tournament name this war, the Barony of Northwoods hosted the "My Mom Can Beat Up Your Mom" Tournament, a tournament open to female fighters with SCA or mundane dependents.
Nine mothers took the field to defend their childrens' honor in this round robin tournament.
Claiming the title of "The World's Greatest Mom" ( so emblazoned on a plaque in macaroni art ( was Countess Kaylah the Cheerful of Ealdormere. Cunian Beornhelm of Atlantia came in as runner-up.

Tarl's Little Polearm Tournament III
For the third straight year, the Shire of Sunderoak(on whose lands Pennsic takes place(hosted a polearm tournament in honor of local polearm hero THL Tarl Shadowraven.
This bear pit style tournament brought out 52 fighters, all of whom brought named polearms to the fray. Two 45-minute bear pits ran(interrupted by a Middle Eastern dance show at "halftime" (with each fighter earning two points for each win and one point for a loss.
At the end of the bear pit, THL Stephen DuBois of Northshield accumulated 97 points, earning the right to face Tarl in a best-of-three fight for the grand prize.
With $50 on the line, Stephen defeated Tarl in two straight bouts.

The Thieves of Hearts were presented with silver rings for their display of courtesy and honor during the Tournament

The East won with a score of 141 from 12 throwers. The Middle accumulated 127 points, also from 12 throwers. Today’s throwers were all Baronial or invited champions. The top individual thrower was Master Charles of Alden of Æthelmearc, throwing for the Midrealm.

Town and Moutain Pass Battle

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter,
Pennsic Independent
DonalBane’s unofficial War Points: Midrealm Dragons 13, East Tygers 8 (one draw)

While the ladies of Pennsic prepared for the shopping “War Point” Wednesday at Midnight Madness, the warriors of Pennsic assembled for a pair of mass battles: the Town battle and the Mountain Pass battle.
The Town battle took place in the morning as the Tyger and Dragon fought over five banners. Possession of each banner was checked at 15-minute intervals during the 90-minute resurrection affair. Whichever side had the majority of possessions of each banner earned a War Point.
With the field split along a diagonal line of hay bales, the East came in from the south side of the field. The East deployed the Ulsterblichen, the Northern Army, Ironlance and Northshield on its left flank; Atlantia, Clovenshield, Duchy von Drachenklaue and the East’s western allies went to the center; and Black Talon, House Serpentius and the Southern Army held the right flank. The Midrealm’s House Lozengia was loaned to the East for the battle alongside VDK. VDK would return the favor in the afternoon’s mountain pass battle.
The Midrealm attacked from the east side of the field. The Dragon deployed Ealdormere, Calontir and its western allies on its left flank; Æthelmearc, Midlands, Trimaris and the Huskarls to the center; and the Tuchux, the Oaken armies, Constellation and Pentamere to the right.
It was a bit of a ragged start, but the Warriors rushed headlong into the fray, during which three distinct battles took place.
To the southeast, the Midrealm and East’s forces faced each other in a static melee through two gates. Neither side was able to make much headway, which allowed the sides to each take one banner in the southeast corner.
To the northeast, the situation was much more fluid. Early on, it looked as if the East’s forces would be able to roll over the Midrealm’s forces and turn the north flank. However, determined counterattacks by the Dragon forces turned the tide. In the end, the north-central banner was taken as House Darkmoon entrenched itself around the banner. Midrealm forces also held the northeast banner.
The battle for the center banner was nothing short of a mosh pit. The Atlantian army focused all its efforts on the banner, only to be met by equally determined forces from Darkyard and Æthelmearc. After 90 minutes of hand-to-hand war, Darkyard was able to secure the banner and a 4-1 win for the Midrealm.
“I know the points are irrelevant and we’re just her having fun,” HRM Lutr told his troops. “I know the heart I saw from our troops was twice that of the East at the end.”
After taking about an hour-long break from the midday sun, the forces reassembled for the Mountain Pass battle. This 60-minute, siege weapon-friendly resurrection battle was fought over three banners to the north, south and within the pass. Possession of each banner at the end of the fight earned a War Point.
The East entered the fray from its traditional west-side starting point. Black Talon and House Serpentia started in the south, while Ironlance, the Ulsterblichen and Atlantia in the center and elements of the East’s Northern and Southern armies to the north.
The Midrealm started from the east again, deploying Æthelmearc, VDK and House Lozengia to the south; Darkyard, the Huskarls, the Oaken armies and Constellation to the center; and Calontir, Ealdormere, Midlands, Pentamere and the Tuchux to north.
The fight in the south was one-sided. Æthelmearcian warriors overran the field and held the East’s forces at least 30 yards ahead of the banner for most of the fight. A late charge from Atlantia made things interesting, but the Midrealm countered by sending Constellation south to help.
In the end, Æthelmearc rolled over the field again with House Sable Maul entrenched at the southern banner.
Things were much closer at the central banner, as charges and countercharges from both sides kept the line fluid inside the pass. In the end, however, the Huskarls were able to punch a hole through the center to secure the banner, with House Stahlgeist.
To the north, the East made numerous charges to take the banner, but combined forces of the Midrealm’s allies proved too much to overcome. At the end of the fight, a solid wall of Calontiri purple surrounded a single Eastern warrior, giving the Midrealm a 3-0 win.

Thursday’s big battle:
The Bridge Battle
After a brief hiatus, the Bridge battle returns to Pennsic. This year, there will be three fights over five bridges, with control of the majority of bridges after 30 minutes (or sweeping the field) earning a War point. Stick around for the Belted, Unbelted and Allied Champions’ battles after the fight.
What to watch for: Spear duels and countercharges. Because of the constricted nature of the battle, it’s always a tactical affair. Also, if one bridge is overrun, keep your eyes open, because the end is usually soon in coming.

The promise of great rewards awaits you at our hideaway home coming! Event to be held on the grounds of the bandits hideway, Hideway Lane, Brockport, PA 15824. Activities offered through the day are: a 3D archery shoot consisting of 30 targets (crossbow and atlatl welcome), a heavy weapons tavern brawl. Æthelmearc Novice Tournament

By Grizzly of Ironstar
Marshal Reporter, Pennsic Independent

Novice rapier fighters are fighters who have been authorized for less than three years and have not won a Kingdom-level tournament. Azriel of Red Spears from the Midrealm, Amalie of Rivenstar also from the Midrealm, and Alaric of Tir Thalor all tied for the final round. The marshals decided to make it a Roman Melee with no deaths from behind. As the match started the two women from the Middle just happened to turn on Alaric and corner him. He lashed out at Amalie just as she struck him for a double kill, leaving Azriel of Rivenstar as today’s tournament winner.

Gates of Rome

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter,
The Pennsic Independent

Official War Points: Midrealm Dragons 37, East Tygers 0
(DonalBane’s unofficial War Points: East Tygers 5, Midrealm Dragons 2 (one draw))

There may be peace at Pennsic, but there was battle on a bright Monday morning as the two Grand Armies met for the first time at the Gates of Rome Battle.
The battle was a one-hour, unlimited resurrection battle fought over five gates of the “Aurelian Wall” that snaked from north to south on the battlefield. Possession of an individual gate was worth one War Point.
The Midrealm lined up with its forces on the east side of the field. The Dragon deployed Ealdormere, Calontir, Ansteorra, its western allies, and the Tuchux to the north; Æthelmearc, the Great Dark Horde, and the Huskarls (Houses Darkmoon, Stahlgeist and Ironwolf) were sent to the center; and Caid, Trimaris, Northern Oaken, the Bog Alliance, and the Darkyard Legion were sent south.
As a gesture of friendship, HRM Lutr sent the Constellation and South Oaken armies –Lutr’s home region—after HRM Konrad asked for men.
The East’s forces were deployed on the west side of the field. The Tyger sent Black Talon, House Serpentius and members of the Northern Army to the north; the Ulsterblichen, Northshield, House Clovenshield, Duchy von Drachenklaue, and the East’s new Midrealm allies were sent to the center; and Ironlance and Atlantia were sent south.
Upwards of 1,500 fighters rushed into battle at the sound of the cannon. All five gates were under heavy assault for the entire battle, leaving all five in dispute.
The north gate was enveloped by a horde of Tuchux and Huskarls, giving the Midrealm the gate. To the south, the Atlantian army held firm, despite several late charges.
The south-central gate was declared a draw by Their Majesties as Darkyard and VDK went at it.
Northshield took the north-central gate. Finally, a conglomerate of East forces and their new Midrealm allies took the central gate.
HRM Konrad praised his Midrealm forces for playing a major role in taking the central gates, noting he was “stunned” his forces took those two gates.
“Go with my thanks because you all fought hard and as warriors,” Konrad told South Oaken and Constellation.
HRM Konrad also said he would like to see some of “the East’s marquee units” fight with the Dragon sometime later this war.
“I think everybody fought really hard, but what I heard most was how much good feeling there was on the field today,” Konrad said. “People were very relaxed.”

Tuesday’s Big Battle: The Woods Battle
The battle that dates back to Pennsic I returns today. This year’s fight will be a two-hour resurrection brawl over five banners, with each banner earning a War Point.
What to watch for: Not much. Non-combatants are still not allowed in the woods, though water-bearing help at resurrection points is appreciated.

Monday’s Archer Champions’ Shoot had some of the best archers in the Known World faced by Rodents of Unusual Size, shrieking eels, potions and sorcerers, and a certain Prince Humperdink—not to mention an Iron Man clout shoot and the dreaded Friend or Foe shoot. This year, two practice sessions were held on Saturday and Sunday to help the archer commanders from each kingdom to select their teams. Both the East and the Middle fielded teams of twenty archers, with sixteen additional archers provided to each from their allied kingdoms.
First up was the Roving Range, featuring ten targets based on the movie “The Princess Bride.” At one station, archers were faced with five Rodents of Unusual Size that had to be shot in sequence, from farthest to nearest. One particularly challenging shoot featured a tiny knothole in a tree that had to be hit before taking aim at the albino behind, and another forced archers to think quickly and hit targets that rhymed with the words being announced. Another target featured a picture of a jug of water—but hitting the jug resulted in negative points; only the rope counted for a positive score. Several shoots, including the large herd of shrieking eels, were unknown timed shoots at unknown distances.
After spending the morning in the woods, the archers emerged to find a lovely lunch spread of fruit, ham, cheese, pepperoni, and salty snacks arranged by Camp Kellswood and friends under the direction of official drudge Maude of Oldchurch and Baron Jorg Johansen. The East Kingdom then shot the Friend or Foe while the Middle shot the clout. The Friend or Foe shoot featured two devilishly intertwined creatures. Only the heart area on the enemy counted for points. Hitting the other creature (a much larger dragon) counted for negative points. The clout shoot gave archers an opportunity to fire as many arrows as possible at the clout (a circular castle more than 100 yards away) within one minute, with any arrow within the clout scoring one point, any reaching the target in the middle scoring two, and any inside the castle window on the target scoring three points.
Final scores for the shoots were: Roving Range: 2591 East; 2143 Middle; Friend or Foe: 53 East, 46 Middle; and Clout, 392 East, 269 Middle.
At the end of the shoot, archer general Mark Squirrelsbane of the East thanked all of the marshals who had made the shoot possible. Thanks to an earlier start time and the efficiency of the range setup, the shoot was complete by 1:30 pm—much earlier than is customary. And best of all, when asked whether they had had fun, the answer from the Archer Champions was a resounding “yes!”

Water Battle

WaterBattleforWeb.jpg
By Grizzly of Ironstar
Marshall Reporter, the Pennsic Independent
Over 300 Pennsic youth stormed the Fort Monday afternoon.
Armed with water guns and water balloons the children of Pennsic rushed the Fort and the handful of adults that protected it. Armed with super soakers, hoses, and buckets of water, it looked as though the adults might actually hold the Fort. In the end, the overwhelming number of children was too much and they were able to storm the Fort, take prisoners and demand the treasure.
The Water Battle is an annual event that has been going on for about 11 years and is sponsored by Shadow Clans.
“It’s a blast! I love doing it each year,” said Taranach, one of the defenders who were taken prisoner in the fort. No ransom was asked or offered for Taranach, and he was released unharmed in the end.
The battle usually stems from some sort of betrayal by the adults towards the children. Swapping brussel sprouts for treasure and kidnapping Santa Claus were by far some of the worst offences and the ones that received the most violent response from the children.
The organizers of the event are very careful to hand pick adults as defenders and marshals who are very even-tempered and careful with the children. All children of Pennsic were welcome to join in the fun. Children over 40 could watch safely from the hay bales. At the end of the battle the adults gave up and relinquished their treasure: foam swords and bags of candy.

A Few Moments With His Majesty of the East

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton
Editor-in-Chief, Pennsic Independent

It’s the question everyone has been asking. Why peace?
I spent nearly an hour talking with HRM Konrad of the East about his decision to concede all 37 war points to the Middle Kingdom. His Majesty was very open and candid about his reasons. “It was not a quick decision,” said HRM Konrad. He and HRM Lutr had spent many months preparing for Pennsic and working to gain allies, a process His Majesty describes as “very political,” since allied kingdoms’ alliances at other wars are often involved. About six weeks ahead of Pennsic, after Meridies and the Tuchux declared for the Middle, he realized the East could be outnumbered by as many as 250 fighters—an unwinnable situation. He and HRM Lutr discussed the possibility of evening up the sides, but nothing was resolved as the actual numbers were not known. HRM Konrad’s greatest fear was the impact on fun and sportsmanship. “I remember kings of the East doing terrible things—not letting their allies go” in the past when the advantage was on their side. He added that he had never agreed with that approach. “There’s no joy in winning against an opponent with no chance. And it has an impact on young fighters, and becomes a vicious cycle—for both sides. I want people to feel it was worth it after driving that far—rather than either getting run over or not even getting a chance to fight
His Majesty offered a few personal reasons as well. “To me, Pennsic is about challenging ourselves. It does not make sense to play a game of chess without the same number of pieces. I have waited 16 years to be king. With the numbers as they were, I might have won a couple of points here or there, but it would not have been a true test of skill.”
Why such a bold move? “I wanted to make a point—to fix the process. I hope the drasticness of it makes people think.” His Majesty stated that the reactions have covered a whole spectrum, from incredibly appreciative and “I can’t thank you enough” to “I’ve never been more disappointed in a king and a knight.” He added that he felt bad about how it might go over with HRM Lutr. “We had a great time with TRM of the Middle at events we attended together and offered our full support when their reign was invalidated. They were wonderful to work with.” But His Majesty is willing to accept the judgement of history for standing on his principles. “Ten years from now, people may read ‘37-0’ in the records and assume that’s the year the Middle slaughtered the East. But it was important to me that it be seen as more than just lip service.”
How have things gone since Sunday? “Today (Monday), HRM Lutr gave me 50 fighters. They fought hard, and I was honored to have them. We had a great time, and people cared even without the points at stake.” He added he hopes this can continue. “I respect HRM Lutr’s negotiations, but I’d like to make sure we keep at a competitive level. I’d like to send some of our marquee households to fight with the Middle as well. Duke Lucan has offered his household if this can be arranged.” He hopes this might improve relations between the two kingdoms, bringing them closer “I know some in the Middle feel that some of our Royal Peers are Satan—I’d like them to get a chance to fight together on the same side.” He mentioned that the King of the West had told him this is more common there, where it’s considered an honor to be asked by the King to cross the field to even out sides.
His Majesty also hopes his actions will have a longer-term effect. “Maybe in the future we can take the ultimate win/lose less seriously.” He described the process of Pennsic negotiation as it exists today as long and exhausting (sounding to me more like corporate lawyers negotiating a contract, complete with board rooms in hotels and conference calls, rather than any approximation of medieval society.) “There is a great deal of pressure on kings to win. The fun is lost.” He added that perhaps future kings might consider scenarios such as one king picking two teams, with the other king given first choice of the two.
He also understands why people may be upset, and hopes that as the week progresses, everything will work out as they realize that there are still many opportunities for honor, camaraderie, and fun. Although these have been a challenging few days, he is continuing in that spirit, stating “I think my sense of humor is abundantly intact.”

A&S: From the Sublimely Beautiful to the Immensely Practical

A&S3web.jpg
By Mary of Montevale
Reporter, Pennsic Independent

Beneath the high wooden beams of the Barn, to the rising crescendo of multiple conversations, a crowd of visitors moved with snail-like speed past four long rows of tables. This was the eleventh anniversary of the Arts and Sciences Display at Pennsic.
Garb, embroidery, calligraphy and illuminations, furniture, maps drawn in ancient styles, tablet-woven trim, metal castings, French hoods, furniture, even axes and knives…it was an overwhelming demonstration of talent, time, and love.
Many of the artisans waited beside their displays, graciously responding time and again to the same comments or questions. “How long did it take you to make this?” “That’s beautiful work, milady (or milord).” Perhaps the most effective, a simple and spontaneous, “Oh…my…God!”
“We have so many wonderful artisans, and they can’t all come to Pennsic.”
The West Kingdom’s Arts Minister, Duchess Eliana Fraser advertised in the kingdom monthly newsletter and at events for items to bring with her for a second year in a row. Duchess Kaaren Harkendottir contributed four embroidered items including a pair of West Kingdom cloaks, a gown which was gifted to Duchess Eliana, and a Princess Pouch. This is a tradition in the West, Her Excellency explained to me. All queens and princesses stepping down from their reigns receive a rose pouch. The dark blue pouch with a shades-of-white appliquéd and couch-worked rose was a gift to The Mad Duchess Cyneswith at the conclusion of her most recent reign as Princess of the Mists.
“Oh, and I’m also the Khan of the Great Dark Horde.”
This was just an afterthought from the only resident of the Outlands to bring an A&S project to the day’s display. Actually, he had two projects, both examples of hand weaving, and he had set them out side by side to show how much his work had improved from his third piece of work (a set of variegated-blue hand towels) to his eighth, a top band for a ger, which will adorn the guard ger of the Great Dark Horde at Pennsic 38.
“It fits in our dining room next to the china cabinet. I told [my husband] if we didn’t have a place to put it the other 11 months, we weren’t even going to start it.”
Baroness Ardis Bluemantle and Langdon Greymorne of Æthelmearc displayed a hand washing station that looked to be nearly 7 feet tall. Langdon built the orange-colored painted piece after being inspired by an extant 15th c. German alpine carved wood cabinet. The Baroness painted the trim, acanthus leaves from the Mary of Burgundy Hours, c. 1500. You may be seeing it again next year; they intend to plumb the cabinet so that it will have gravity-powered running water.
“It’s uncomfortable sitting on the beading.”
That’s only one of the reasons Anna Bella Di Cherubino of the East placed real pearls all over the bodice and sleeves, but only on the front panel and around the hem of the Elizabethan gown she will be wearing tonight at the Pennsic Masked Ball. The other reason is that the stunning gown weighs about 70 pounds. Creation of the gown began with inspiration from the fabric itself, a welted brocade. Contributing to the overall weight besides the pearls were sequins, gold trim, glass beads, and gold lace. “The gold lace,” the seamstress told me, “weighs a couple of pounds just by itself.” A couple of hidden secrets help to keep such a gown from being an overwhelming burden for the woman wearing it: a real “wheel” of cane in the hoop skirt beneath it supports the weight of the skirt; and an arrangement of cords runs through the hoop and the skirt into the garment’s bodice for lacing. The gown is not making its debut at the masked ball tonight; it has previously been worn at Birka, a well-known Eastern event.
Pewter melts at 480º Fahrenheit
THL Etienne le Couteau des Roches of the Middle is the metal caster who created the tokens that teachers in the Pennsic University received when they signed in at A&S point. Etienne, who had been casting hot metal for about eight years, uses soapstone for carving molds and Bondo (an auto body filler) for making mold a from extant objects such as coins. On display this day were some Society officer tokens, Middle Kingdom award tokens, replica coins cast for a gaming-themed event, and a period Lord Mayor’s chain which had been used by Etienne’s local group. Making…ahem, “copies” of authentic coins can be documented as far back as Roman Britain. Soldiers would take a coin from their pay, mold clay around it, fire the clay, and then had a usable mold into which molten local, cheaper copper could be poured. If you are interested in doing pewter casting, Etienne said, the materials are available from merchants at Pennsic.
“I just can’t sit with empty hands.”
Trimaris was the other kingdom with only one artisan at the exhibition. Mistress Ekaterina Zvyozdosamtseva (called “Koshka”) was “her own walking canvas,” as one lady who stopped to admire her embroidery remarked. The embroidery style on Koshka’s head cloth, her gown, a 13th-14th c. Tiraz towel laid on the display table, and a work-in-progress still in her hands as she talked, is a double running stitch, which is a precursor to blackwork. The head cloth, the smallest piece of the lot, took eight months to complete. The motifs, stitched primarily in blue, and less often in the other two primary colors as well, have been used in Egyptian textiles since at least the Coptic weavings of the 4th-5th centuries. The back of each piece is as fine as the front. Two women listened, fascinated, as Koshka described the special frame her lord made so she could work in their van during long road trips. When in use, the frame rests against the dashboard of the vehicle.
“I pray to Odin every time I dye with madder because he is the Jokester. I figure it can’t hurt.”
In the plethora of marvelous projects on display, this reporter’s eye was drawn almost immediately to a rainbow “mosaic” of hand-dyed hanks of wool. THL Odette de Saint Remy of Ealdormere, wearing a gown of handspun wool, stood on the other side of the table on which lay her project: an “Anglo-Scandanavian Dye Study,” whose purpose was to show the possible colors available to people in Northern Europe in the 9th-11th centuries. All the plants she used have been documented to the British Isles or Scandanavia, and sixteen of them were raised in Odette’s garden. Nine plants were harvested wild, some to add to the variety, others to supplement a type she had raised. Madder is apparently difficult to work with, maybe even notoriously difficult, if I judge from comments made by others viewing Odette’s work. She explained to me that the color you achieve can depend on the pH balance and the plant’s condition, although the color will usually range from coral to red to fuchsia pink.
For this project, she used no edible plants except sorrel whose roots yield brown to rust colors, leaves result in pale green shades, and seeds give warm orangey to copper colors. The sample wool hanks dyed with Queen Anne’s Lace ranged from chartreuse to darker woodsy greens. Odette said a friend got a bright yellow shade from the same kind of plant, and the difference may have been due to the water used during the dying process. She also raised woad and dyed with it for this project. The resulting color was no surprise at all.
“Next I may take some from here and some from there to create a new design.”
The reproduction of a portion of the Bayeux Tapestry done in naturally dyed lambs’ wool on linen by Iofa merch Macsen of Meridies is still a work-in-progress. Having seen the original in situ in its museum in Bayeux, France a couple of times, even I could tell that Iofa has reproduced the exact style of stitches in the exact colors. The panel on display was from a section of the Tapestry right before the Norman horses begin their charge. In addition to her work on display today, Iofa has researched documented evidence of early dates for embroidery in the British Isles and is working on writing up the results of her research. Will she be reproducing any other panels of the Bayeux Tapestry? She is not yet certain; the section displayed today will become a pillow when it is finished.
This year’s adult A&S display mixed the breathtakingly beautiful with flashes of down-to-earth practicality, and more often than not, within a single piece of work.

Midrealm Edges to Victory in the Wood

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

DonalBane’s Unofficial War Points: East Tygers 7, Midrealm Dragons 5 (one tie)

The Grand Armies of the East and Midrealm met again Tuesday in a Pennsic original: the Woods Battle. This year, the East came in from the north side of the woods, while the Midrealm’s forces entered from the south.
At the sound of the cannon more than 1,000 gentles entered the woods. According to reports from the front, the Midrealm’s forces surged forward all the way to the East’s resurrection point at one time, but the East rallied to put heavy pressure on the Midrealm lines.
In the end, the East was able to hold the banner closest to its resurrection point and took the “Christmas tree” banner in the center after a heavy brawl. Meanwhile, the Midrealm held the banner near its resurrection point and its banner to the northwest. It was the East’s banner in the southeast that proved the decisive fight, as the Midrealm held the banner despite a tornado of charges from the East.
Sir Theodric, General of the Midrealm Army, marched out of the woods with the final banner and presented it to HRM Lutr, who then addressed his troops before the heavens opened with rain.
“I am happy to report, with our entire army present and with our allies in the field, we were able to score a 3-2 win,” he said.

Pas of Gilded Bee
The Champions of the Gilded Bee took to the field Tuesday to entertain an assembled group of ladies in a traditional deed of arms.
Under the eyes of Duke Edmund of Hertford and Master Gallaran de Crecy, the Vennens — Dame Lianna, Master Michael of Bracken and Lord Edrick — challenged the Tennens — Baron Connel O’Hairt, Baron Edward Brackenbury, Baron Robert Downey and Johan de Fuse — to single and melee combat.
All the ladies in attendance were pleased by the combat.
Wednesday’s Big Battles: Town Battle and Mountain Pass Battle
That’s right folks: two War Point battles in one day.
The Town Battle will be a 90-minute resurrection affair fought over five flags. Possession of the flags will be checked every 15 minutes. Majority control of each banner will earn one War point.
What to watch for: shifting units and movement. This one has tactical battle written all over it.
After the town battle, the two armies will reform for the mountain pass battle. This 60-minute resurrection fight will be fought over three banners and possession of each at the end of the battle earns one War point. This is the battle where combat archers and siege engineers most often come out to play.
What to watch for: Incoming!! Arrows, ballista bolts, and trebuchet rocks do not care if their target is armored or not, so be aware. Also, be aware that the marshals ask that no one watch any battles from inside the Fort when siege engines are involved.
One additional scheduling note: The annual Tuchux Charity Tournament is set to return to Pennsic Thursday at 2 p.m. on the east side of the main battlefield. This is a random weapons tournament. All participants are asked to bring a $5 entry fee to the tournament with all proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Additional donations are welcomed.
