Allies hold off Tyger and Dragon in the Woods

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

After a day off Wednesday, hostilities at Pennsic resumed Thursday as the new War headed to the War’s oldest battle: the Woods battle.
The Known World Alliance, flush from their victory over the Mid-East Alliance on Tuesday looked to press their advantage. The Allies entered the woods from the northeast corner.
The Mid-East Alliance looked to get back in the war as the Tyger and Dragon deployed its forces from the southwest corner.
This year’s battle was a two-hour unlimited resurrection fight fought over seven banners. The side that took the most banners won the event point.
More than 1,000 gentles charged into the woods north of the camp for the last time. Beginning with Pennsic War IXL, the woods battle will be conducted in a new area located behind Mount Eislinn.
According to dispatches from the front, the fighting was fierce in virtually every pocket of the woods. Some reports had the central banner exchanging hands as many as five times.
It was a close battle throughout, but when the final cannon had sounded, the Known World Allies had claimed four banners to three by the Mid-East Alliance, giving the Known World Allies the event point.

Friday’s big battle: Helm’s Deep
The final big fight of Pennsic War XXXVIII will be fought at the Pennsic fort. There will be two 30-minute fights over six banners around the fort. Each army will have a chance to attack and defend, with attacking armies having three resurrections and defenders having one. The side that possesses more banners will win.

OG on those Cordially Cordials

To me there is no better sound than, "OG, you got to try this." It is music to my ears.
The start of another new taste adventure.
OG on those Cordially Cordials
I have many books on the subject, one with over 400 recipes. As with many things in the SCA you can learn the basic “how to” in a short amount of time, but to perfect it may take a lifetime. Vodka + flavoring + sugar water = very basic cordials. Neither fermentation nor yeast is necessary. They can be drunk very young but will improve with a little age. The varieties are endless: lemon, lime, violet, rose for example. Cherry or strawberry cordials are great for beginners. You can have banana, galingale, ginger, clove, coriander, Irish creme, Kahlua, chocolate-covered cherry, Captain Black, Fog cutters, butterscotch, and hundreds more. I have made my own ouzo. I like the store bought brands better. They’re cheaper. Orange ZAP, made with moonshine is another I have tried.
I remember a cordial class we had at Pennsic many years ago. It had 40 people, 25 bottles, and 103-degree temperature. At the end we all had a good rolling sweat going and I, for one, could not find my way home. AHHH, the GOOD TIMES!
I have made a garlic cordial that would take your breath away, but it was great with pizza. A man came up to me with a light green nearly fluorescent liquid. "OG, you have got to try this," he said to me. I took a drink. "Can you guess what it is?" he asked me.
I took a second swig. It was green apple Jolly Rancher candies and Everclear.
A man has created JabaÒero cordial. He made it extra sweet and he served it cold.
It tastes wonderful and goes down smooth and it is in your stomach before you find out that it just may be RADIOACTIVE!

Lords and Ladies Charge your glasses and raise them high!
To the great brewers of the SCA!
Filling our glasses for over 40 years now. Thank you! As long as there is an OG, someone will be willing to drink it. To you and yours…

Drink well
Drink often
Drink with…

OG

East Pulls Out First Day of War

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter -- Pennsic Independent

Monday’s Event Points: East Tygers 3, Midrealm Dragons 2
War Points: East Tygers 1, Midrealm Dragons 0

With the Midrealm winning the rapier champions’ tournament and the East claiming the archery champions’ point, Sunday’s War Point would be determined on the heavy fighting lists.

Unbelted Champions’ Battle
The always-explosive Unbelted Champions’ Battle took the field first, as 45 warriors of the Midrealm faced 45 warriors of the East in a last-man-standing affair.
At the sound of “Lay on!” both sides spread their forces across the field and into each other. However, the Midrealm had more success in reforming its ranks after the initial charge. These blocks of Dragon fighters were able to roll over the field and claim a decisive win for the Midrealm, keeping the sword of honor in the Midrealm’s camp for another year.

Belted Champions Battle
Having seen their unbelted brethren claim victory, the Midrealm looked to claim its first win in the Belted Champions Battle in more than a decade.
Again, both sides charged into each other and, this time, the fight was a battle of attrition.
Both sides looked like they might snatch victory, but a few Tyger knights were able to avoid the main brawl and stay together, taking down the surviving Midrealm warriors. The East once again claimed the point.

Allied Champions Battle
The allies of the East and Midrealm returned to stage one of the most rollicking battles of the war. A force of 89 Eastern allies and 89 Midrealm allies did battle in an hour-long SCA-style game of capture the flag. Resurrections were allowed at two- and three-minute intervals.
The East’s allies dominated the early proceedings, capturing the Midrealm allies’ flag at 4:36 and 13:36. However, the Midrealm allies rallied with two captures at 19:38 and 28:24.
With the scores tied at halftime (the 30-minute mark), the two armies switched sides on the field. The Eastern allies dominated the second half, scoring captures at 35:23, 38:04, 43:49 and 50 minutes. The final score was 6-2, giving the East the event point.

Moonwulf Concert Benefits Duchess Ariel

By Julie of Blackmers
For the Pennsic Independent

A Pennsic favorite took the stage five minutes early Saturday night at the Arts and Sciences stage, before a packed house and a crowd that was already raring to go.
After casually chatting with audience members, Duke Moonwulf (Michael Longcor) grabbed his guitar, leapt to the stage and asked, “Anyone care if we start early?” The crowd’s roar of approval needed no interpretation. The entertainer welcomed his audience into the show by opening with “Dance a Little Dance.”
After the first set, Duke Moonwulf, in his own grand tradition, announced the previously unknown beneficiary of funds raised at this year’s concert: The Memorial Fund for Duchess Arielle of Atlantia, who recently passed away. Money raised will go toward the lingering medical and other expenses her family has incurred. The proverbial hat was passed, and the audience responded with enthusiasm to the exceedingly worthy cause.
For an hour, Duke Moonwulf, his drummer and dancers, continued to enchant an audience of loyal fans who sang right along. At one point he asked, “So I hear you got some rain? … No, you didn’t.” Then, Duke Moonwulf regaled the audience with the classic musical tale of Pennsic IV, which saw nine inches of rain in three days.
Duke Moonwulf sent his enthusiastic audience off with a lullaby sure to endear itself to mothers everywhere, in which the singer promises the child that the demons under the bed would surely “eat him up.” With that, Duke Moonwulf left his audience smiling and cheerful and undeterred by tales of treacherous demons.

VIKING! Where? When? Who? WHO, ME?

I am a Northman, one of the "Men of the Uplands". I have family in Greenland, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Constantinople and many, MANY other places. My wife, sons, and I have a small farm with some sheep. My wife brews mead. I do blacksmithing. My father sits on council. It is a hard life. We do not have much.

The Irish call us Gaill, “foreigners”. Franks call us Normanni: “northmen”. Germans refer to us as Ashmen. Spanish Arabs call us Majus, “heathens”. Anglo-Saxons call us Danes. The Slavs and Byzantine Greeks call us Rus,’ which later would become the word for “Russian”.

My Webster’s tells me Viking can be a noun or a verb. "Any of the Scandinavian pirates of the 8th to 10th centuries" it says. Another dictionary tells me it is “the act of raiding”, giving us the phrase “To go a-viking.” Another definition says, “a label given to a Scandinavian people of a certain era.” My world history book says the original definition is "creek-men." My atlas finds no Viking land.

We have worked as mercenaries and private guards. When need for money is great, my brothers and I get out the boats and go raiding. WE GO A-VIKING! It is very profitable.

Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
To Vikings, Northmen, or whatever you wish to call us. And if I may be so bold, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Ask Doctor Best

Ask Doctor Best

That learned scholar, Doctor Henry Best, is available to answer your personal questions on matters grave or frivolous, through consultation of portents in the heavens. Please remember that, although he is educated in astrology and a myriad other areas of natural philosophy, holding a PhD from the University of Atlantia, Doctor Best is not a licensed psychotherapist.
Dear Doctor Best,
This year, I want to conceive at Pennsic. What's the best day and time for that?
Signed,
June Bride

Dear June,
What a completely delightful question! I'm happy to help you with such a community-minded endeavor. Let me begin by reassuring you: I don't see any actual unfavorable days in the coming week, per se. In general, conceive away whenever you wish. You'll be joining in a fine tradition. A great many second generation SCAdians are born under the sign of Taurus.
There are some who say that you should conceive between days 10 and 14 of the lunar month, but I consider that to be something of an old wives' tale, not grounded in proper Astrological Scientific Theory. No, in your specific case, the most important factor is the transit of Venus from Gemini to Cancer, which occurs tonight. As a June bride, this transit affects you deeply. If you married June 22nd or later, your marriage is in Cancer, and you will enter a highly propitious time tomorrow, which will last you well into September. If, however, you married the 21st or earlier, your marriage is in Gemini and you haven't a moment to lose! Cancel all appointments for today, consume a good deal of garlic and perhaps some red wine to place your humours in proper alignment, and waste no further time.
If you require any additional assistance in this matter, my dear June, please feel free to consult with me this evening at my office.

Cordially,
Doctor Best

Attention: Gemini/Cancer couples: Venus is in transit tonight, from Gemini to Cancer. This exchange will occur at 8:47 PM and I strongly advise any romantically involved Gemini/Cancer pairings to seek discreet shelter in their tents.
Do you have a question? Bring it to Dr. Best’s office at Sun Baked Studio on Battle Road. Whenever possible, include birth date, time, and place for all parties involved. Your identity will be held in strictest confidence. “Ask me any question, and I’ll give you any answer!”

Brave New War

By Lord DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Correspondent -- Pennsic Independent
Each year, the populace and warriors of the Known World descend on Æthelmearc for the Pennsic War
Warriors come looking for glory on this battlefield — although the quest for glory on this year’s battlefield will be different than years past.
The format of Pennsic XXXVIII will be unique. During the first half of War Week, the traditional war of East vs. Midrealm will commence.
However, during the middle of war, alliances will dissolve and Pennsic will see a fight — the East and Midrealm will join forces against the other kingdoms of the Known World.
How did such a huge change at Pennsic come to pass? It began not long after HRM Andreas of the East and HRM EikBrandr of the Midrealm won their respective crown tournaments.
“When we spoke for the first time, [Andreas] has this idea for a new war where the East and the Midrealm would fight together,” HRM EikBrandr said. “I told him… I think it would be better for my kingdom to fight the first half of War the traditional way. I had a bit more of a conservative approach.”
HRM Andreas said he was agreeable to the move because he wanted to foster better relationships between the Tyger and Dragon.
“There have been some hard feelings between the Eastrealm and the Midrealm in past years,” HRM Andreas said. “I want to go back to our roots. It’s not about smashing the enemy’s face in; it’s about having fun.”
Both kings indicated inter-kingdom relations could improve by bringing the two forces together — as happened last year at the Field Battle. HRM Andreas joked that he would not declare peace at opening ceremonies as happened last year, but he felt Duke Konrad’s decision to do so last year was “a noble one.”
HRM Maynard of AEthelmearc also said he was all for the idea, noting he was in communication with the two belligerent kings early in his reign as well.
“I think it’s great,” HRM Maynard said. “It gives us a chance to show we can bring a force from our lands and turn the table on the East and Midrealm. It’s a great opportunity to show what we can do.”
HRM Maynard said communications between him and his newfound allies have been ongoing to prepare for the second half of the war.
One of the chief features of the new War format is the absence of any war point battles on Wednesday. Both kings indicated they wanted their fighters to have a day free of obligation to enjoy the War.
EikBrandr and Andreas each say they hope their forces can grow closer during this war, as the two kings have during their reigns.
“I have personally really enjoyed getting to know Andreas though this process,” HRM EikBrandr said. “With mutual respect and by forming a bond of friendship with each other, it has really created a positive outlook for this War. We wanted to create a Pennsic that was stress-free.”
“He’s very much like me,” HRM Andreas said of EikBrandr. “He cares for his people and cares about the people here.
“If you come back to camp with a smile on your face and talk about how much fun it was to fight, you’re going to come back to Pennsic,” HRM Andreas added. “It’s good for all of us; more of our people will come back.”
How will the new format of War play out? Check out the Sunday edition of the Pennsic Independent.

You know what I hate? Not much, really. I am a pretty… well maybe not really pretty… happy guy. Pennsic is fantastic and SCA people are the best in the world, as I have said many times. However, flat beer and tear-down Saturday are on my list of the things I hate. Ever seen someone in great garb? Shoes right, A&S competition-quality tunic, perfect period leather, and all the trimmings. You go up to compliment them and there is a Bluetooth glowing on their ear. I think that they’re a BORG! They have been assimilated by the mundane world.
That world is my big problem this year. Don't you hate it when the mundane world gets in the way of what is really important? SCA events, Pennsic, good friends. We all have work troubles, money troubles, car troubles, got to paint the house, responsibilities, health issues, health of loved ones, etcetera. When those times come we cope but when those times come all at once, all of them ganging up on you, you feel that the fates have conspired. God has hit that big “smite” button.
We make a choice. We hate to like staying home in August. It is sad that at times like this we need Pennsic the most. We need a break from the mundane insanity. Unfortunately, it is often not meant to be. Sadly, we are adults and sometimes we must choose work over play. As for me, right now Pennsic is a ? My mother’s health has taken a turn and I may be staying home playing the good son. Many a year I was not. I must make amends. The yurt has been set up in the backyard. Had the grandkids over for a sleepover. They think it is cool. It is!! I may come to Pennsic for a long weekend. We will see what the gods say.
Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
To the Gods! Whichever ones you choose to pray to, may they in their divine wisdom and mercy bring us all together again next year. Till then…

Mid-East Champions Roll; Honor even in Helm’s Deep

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter – Pennsic Independent

Friday’s Event Points: Mid-East Alliance 2.5, Known World Alliance 0.5
War Points: Known World Alliance 2, Mid-East Alliance 1

The final day of battle at Pennsic War XXXVIII saw history take place at the Midrealm and East Kingdom joined forces in two champions’ battles before the final large melee in the fort.

Combined Unbelted Battle
After decades of fierce combat against each other, the unbelted champions of the East and Midrealm joined forces Friday against a force of champions from the Allied Kingdoms. The Midrealm and East each fielded 60 unbelted warriors to do battle with 120 allies.
The fight was as hard as it was decisive. Forces from the East charged the Allies left flank and blew it open, while the Midrealm’s forces chewed through their opposition. The training of the East and Midrealm paid off, as they were able to reform more quickly and sweep the field in short order.

Combined Belted Battle
HRM Andreas of the East told the unbelted champions he hoped he could duplicate their success during the belted champions battle
HRM Andreas and HRM EikBrandr of the Midrealm joined a force of 40 Chivalry champions on the field to face 42 belted champions from the Allied Kingdoms.
Again, the cohesion of the Midrealm and East’s forces proved decisive in this fight. Whole forces of Tyger and Dragon champions rolled over the field, sweeping their foes before them. In the end, the Mid-East forces eliminated Duke Lars of Northshield, Duke Valharic of Atlantia and Sir Richard Wulfwood of Calontir to complete the rout.

Helm’s Deep Battle
The final big fight of war took place in and around the Pennsic fort. This battle was fought over six banners around the fort, with the defenders having one resurrection and the attackers having three resurrections.
Each battle was scheduled for 30 minutes, with possession of the banners checked at 10 minutes, 20 minutes and the end of the battle. The side with more banners after both fights would win.
The Known World Allies defended the fort first. Northshield and its mercenary allies guard the east gate, while Ealdormere held the center of the fort. Forces from Atlantia, Æthelmearc and Calontir stationed themselves outside the fort to the east.
At the sound of the cannon, the Mid-East’s strategy was clear. The Tyger and Dragon sent token forces to occupy the east gate of the fort while focusing the bulk of its efforts on sweeping the banners outside and taking the north gate.
The move proved effective as forces from the Northern army turned the flank of the Allies and started a general retreat among Allied forces back towards the fort.
From there, House Darkmoon occupied the west gate, while the Unsterblichen and Oaken armies led a grinding assault on the north gate.
The allies threw almost everything they had at the north gate to stop the push, but the tide of Mid-East warriors proved impossible to stem. Soon, HRM Andreas was leading the Mid-East’s forces through the north gate, while House Darkmoon punched through the west gate not long after.
From there, the rout was on as Mid-East forces relentlessly pushed east. Around the 17-minute mark, the cannon sounded to end the battle. The banner count was 15-3 in favor of the Mid-East after one battle.
The Mid-East commanders made a strategic decision before the second fight took place. Since they needed only to hold the three banners inside the fort for 20 minutes to win the battle, they decided not to deploy any forces outside the fort.
Thus, the Southern army was sent to hold the east gate and the whole of the Midrealm army deployed to the west. The Unsterblichen and Northern army, backed up by the Huskarls, forced a kill-pocket defense in front of the north gate.
Early on, it looked as if the strategy would work as wave after wave of Atlantians fell in the kill-pocket. However, the Allies’ numerical advantage slowly began to show, as they pushed the pocket back.
When the forces were pushed back to the north gate, the Tuchux used the opening to run around the back of the fort and joined a push by Ealdormere on the east gate.
After a final hold, the breaches on the east and north gates turned into a rout. At battle’s end, it seemed the whole of the Allies’ army had surrounded a small force of Midrealm warriors at the West’s banner.
The cannon sounded to end the battle. It took the Allies longer to sweep the fort than the Mid-East forces, but they still accomplished it in less than 20 minutes. That meant the banner count was 15-3 for the Allies in the second battle, which tied the battle and split the event point.
HRM EikBrandr said he was pleased with this Pennsic war, regardless of the outcome.
“We’re absolutely, 100 percent thrilled,” EikBrandr said. “With the camaraderie and new friendships we have made this War, we have seen the fruition of all that we had hoped.”
Saturday’s big battle: The flight of dragons through the gate!
As always, HUZZAH, VIVAT, HOOBAH and WASSAIL to the warriors and warrior watchers of the Known World. May we all meet again at Pennsic XXXIX.

The worth of a man in the Middle Ages can be judged in many ways: his skill with a sword, his pedigree, his history, how much land he controlled, how many servants e had. There were rules, and rules were important.
Squires had seven servants: one clerk, two grooms, two lesser servants and two boys. Knights had 23. Barons had nearly 70. Earls had about 200. Dukes had around 250. Kings and queens…1000s! Some stayed with the property and others went with their lord traveling. It depended on who you were and where you were going and for how long. The very rich and important could always hire more. Power has its privileges. We are lucky we are at Pennsic. We no longer have a need for servants and slaves.
Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
To the Beast and Boar with a breakfast that will hold me to dinner. To an OG, that is something. To the coffee houses that handle my caffeine addiction and to the ladies of OGLAND who provide four-star dinners at a discount price, served with a smile. To all the people who give me beer with the line "OG, you’ve got to try this," and to the Goddess who yearly brings me cheesecake TO DIE FOR! I could invent no world better than this. Thank you all… I drink to you.

Pennsic Closes with Smiles and Friendship

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter–Pennsic Independent

A sense of friendship and new beginnings presided over Closing Ceremonies Friday at the barn as 12 sovereigns from the Known World came forward to close Pennsic XXXVIII.
The Kingdom of Aethelmearc arrived first and followed to the dais by the sovereigns, with TRM of the East and Midrealm coming in last.
Each sovereign spoke the populace, mainly of how much fun they had and how many new friends they made during this War. Appeals were also made for the populace to attend Gulf Wars, Estrella War, the Great Western War, and even Rowny Festival in Lochac.
The two belligerent sovereigns spoke last, though it was clear there was no belligerence between them.
“This really has been a good Pennsic,” HRM Andreas of the East said. “Something changed this War. We hope everyone tells stories about this year. We must always remember that we are a family.”
HRM Andreas noted there were 300 more fighters on the field this year, which he felt was due to the trust everyone put in the new War format.
HRM Andreas noted the East “barely, barely squeaked by” to win the traditional War. He closed by telling his fellow sovereigns, “If you’re ever in Jersey, look us up.”
HRM EikBrandr of the Midrealm made it clear he was ecstatic with the War.
“This time of change at War need not be a one-time shot,” HRM EikBrandr said. “This War has created an evolution at Pennsic. There is no one here that we should hate. No one else out there is like us.”
“Who we really are are brothers in arms,” EikBrandr added, and then embraced Andreas, to the cheers of the crowd.
HRM EikBrandr also noted the allies won the new War.
The War Horn was then summoned and Baron Master Rocco Barbarossa of House Darkyard blew a high blast to officially end the War.
The Pennsic countdown then commenced and three gentles were left standing at the end, signifying their attendance at the first Pennsic.
In the last act of Closing Ceremonies, TRM Andreas and EikBrandr switched places on the dais to stand with the other’s queen, before the four belligerent sovereigns – no longer belligerent – walked out arm in arm to the cheers of the populace.

Brave New War, Part II

By DonalBane of Blakmers
Battlefield Reporter
Pennsic Independent
So Pennsic War XXXVIII will offer a whole new take on the war. How exactly will it work?
First, let’s have a word about War Points. Every individual competition will be worth an “event” point. This applies to both the traditional war and the Middle-East vs. the Known World war.
Whichever side wins more event points during each day will win one War Point.
Both wars will be best-of-three affairs, with whichever side wins two out of three days winning the war.
Along with Opening Ceremonies, Sunday is also “champion’s day” in the traditional war, with the archery, rapier, belted, unbelted and allied champions all having their say. Each of these is worth one event point each.
Be aware that start times for the champions’ events have changed from the Pennsic Book: start time is 1 p.m. for archery champions; 12:30 p.m. for rapier champions; 2 p.m. for belted and unbelted champion; and 3 p.m. for allied champions.
On Monday, it’s time for the Great Armies to take the field for two new battles, each worth one war point.
The River Battle will begin at 10 a.m. and will be three 20-minute fights over three bridges over a curving river. To possess a bridge, an army must raise two flags over each bridge. Possession over a majority of bridges at 10 minutes and at the end of each fight wins the fight; whoever wins two of three fights will win the event point.
About 45 minutes after the river battle will be the Gate Battle. This 45-minute, unlimited resurrection battle will be fought over five gates, with the side possessing the most gates winning the event point.
The rapier fighters, who will contest their Field Battle at 3 p.m, will decide Monday’s final event point.
Tuesday is the final day of the traditional war, with the three event points being determined by the conclusion of the first populace archery shoot and two field battles.
The fun will begin after the second Field Battle. That’s when a ceremony will be held ending the traditional war and opening the new war.

Congratulations!
You should be proud. You have done well. No, I am not talking of your garb or your fighting prowess, nor your scribe work, A&S or storytelling, though they are all very nice. I am talking about your kids.
OG on our greatest treasure
Our LegacyThe next generation of the SCA
From my chair, I have seen babies turn to toddlers turn to urchins turn to teens turn to fighters and squires. They are a joy and a wonder. I have seen teens going around helping us grayhairs with our tents and camps. The youth fighters fight with honor and passion. They fight fair and they fight hard. Armies of urchins sell you your paper. Take some time and go through the youth A&S. I did last year and was very impressed.
Are our children perfect? No! But none of us are. My son spent way too much time on video games. I spent my youth in a smoky bar with a pool cue and a beer. Equally bad if not worse. But what I saw last year amazed me. When a teen did cause a problem, two other came over and tried to make it right. They are policing themselves… a sign of true maturity.
We could learn much from our children. Will there be problems? There always have been and always will be, but let us not punish all for the acts of a few. Let us lead by example and look to the good that our children do. There is much to brag about.
Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
We drink to those not old enough to drink with us, but someday soon they will buy the beer! To the next generation! May they enjoy all the successes we have had and also enjoy all the failures. Failures are part of learning. Failures can be a lot of fun. So says the fat, old, drunken…

Pennsic’s Best Kept Bardic Non-Secret

TSivia bas Tamara v’Amberview
Features Reporter -- Pennsic Independent

For the 12th year in a row, the Chalkman Pub’s bardic competition was held Friday night to an appreciative audience. The houses of Sea Chameleon and The Burly Ten Pint Men have been holding their bardic competition at the edge of the old Tuchux Hill to a house so packed that the camp walls have to be lowered to accommodate spectators. This year’s competition featured about 15 acts, from a capella performances to guitar, mandolin, and even small (Uillean or Northumbrian) pipes.

Jointly emceed by Lord Commodore Robin McCauley and Lord Hennessey, the Chalkman bardic is aimed at entertainers who do not work with drums as their primary instrument. As Lord Hennessey put it, “Put a couple of doumbeks together and you have a drum circle. We’re aiming at the performers who are looking for a venue where they don’t have to compete with the drumming.” Most nights the Pub is open, it becomes a jam session spot for many bards of the Known World.

The Chalkman Pub itself runs Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays of the two weeks of Pennsic, and features house band Revelwood as well. Information on entering their bardic competition (which is by pre-registration only) can be found at their website: www.chalkman.com.

This year’s competition featured entertainers from across the Known World, and performances included Master John ap Wynne performing a Gaelic love song, Andrew Scarheart with a stirring rendition of “The Minstrel” (not the 1900s song of the same name), and Jean, singing “Morgan le Fey”.

Winners of the Master of Ceremony’s awards were “The Omega Company Pick-Up Band” with three Irish reels, Rutger with “Bound for South Australia”, and Terrace Fire with “Crooked Jack”. The winners for originality were “Fezzes Down”, while Don Andrew won for Best Performance. The Stage Presence award went to Master Cedric of Ansteorra for a hilarious song with an “R” rating, while last year’s overall winner Michael Kelly of An Tir took the Musical Quality award with his rousing rendition of Master Hector of Ealdormere’s song “Rise”. The overall winners of this year’s Chalkman Pub bardic were “The Respectable Hooligans” doing a medley of pieces including the original composition “Hooligan’s Reel”.

With well over 100 attendees (and a “drive by” service window for those desirous of refreshment but unable to get through the crowd to the bar), the Chalkman Pub Bardic was a most lively and enjoyable experience for both performers and audience alike. Next year, check the web site before you leave for War, and pencil in the show for your enjoyment.

Behold the Fountain of Youth! Liquid GOLD! Free for the taking. Alchemists thought it was the key due to its color. It is the not so secret secret ingredient in most love potions. It is used in wool dyeing and cleaning as well as leather curing. We can find it used as soap, cleaner and bleach. It can help harden steel for hammer heads. Gunpowder, medicines, shampoos… the list of uses is almost endless.
People left their daily donation in a barrel on the corner. Some could even sell it. A higher price was paid to a red-haired donor. I do not know why. The Romans even taxed it. In a culture older and far wiser than ours it was thought of as a health drink. When used daily, claims that it could cure all ills and give near superhuman powers were common. I cannot stand the taste, whether mixed with water, milk, wine or even BEER. -HA-
There are stories of young boys lining up with pots of their morning donation to their emperor. Yes, it is said morning donations were the best. All this from what we now throw away… What we leave in the Port-a-castle and pay to dispose of.
Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
Look in my mug…yes, it is yellow, but it is 100% BEER. I swear!

Pennsic Memorial Stone Project Underway

Dame TSivia bas Tamara v’Amberview
Features Reporter –Pennsic Independent

“The People of the Folk-Assembly (Society) raised this stone in order to give honor to those who have walked these fields and fallen. We will meet again.” These words will be carved in runes on a nine-ton slab of Pennsylvania sandstone to be installed at Cooper’s Lake as a memorial to those in the SCA who have passed away over the years. The project is the brainchild of Lord Valdis of Gotland (mka Ken Koll) of the shire of Montevale in the East Kingdom, an idea that came to him after he lost a good friend.
Next year, an eleven-foot slab of Butler sandstone will be delivered to Pennsic, and the public will be invited to help carve the memorial itself. The decision to choose local stone was twofold: first to avoid shipping costs, and second to make this memorial truly part of Pennsic by using local stone.
The three foot wide slab will be worked on by approximately 200 to 250 attendees after some training in the use of the tools and the techniques needed for the project, says Lord Valdis. This year, he can be seen either at his merchant booth (#64) or out near the large tree located near booths 108/109, carving a sample stone and raising some of the approximately $6,000 needed for the project. The memorial stone itself is anticipated to stand about seven feet above ground level when completed and installed.
The Gotland-style artwork on the stone features a dragon and tiger, and a Viking boat sailing on Cooper’s Lake with its shields adorned in a style reminiscent of the Æthelmearc arms. On its top there will be a valkyrie welcoming the fallen soul, while a bard plays a harp in the background.
If the sample stone Lord Valdis is working on this year turns out well, he is considering auctioning it off to help raise some of the project’s costs. “If we find ourselves with extra cash, we intend to purchase some concrete benches to install by the memorial stone, so visitors may sit in quiet contemplation,” he noted.
Donations to the project may be made while Lord Valdis is carving, at numerous donation cans around Pennsic, or through Paypal via the email address of PennsicRuneStone@oakthorne.com. The web site to read more on this project is pennsicrunestone.com.

Within Range

By Christophe of Grey
Missile Weapons Reporter – Pennsic Independent

Archery
Monday and Tuesday, the populace shoot between the East and allies and Middle and allies occurred on the archery range. The East and allies took the day with a total score of 2574 versus 1629 for the Middle and allies. Wednesday and Thursday the populace can shoot the war point a second time with scores tallied for East and Middle versus all allies.
Thursday at 10 am on the youth range there will be a Beany Baby shoot for the youth archers.
Friday at 9 am, the Youth Champion shoot will be held. Youths wishing to participate must have their own bows and arrows. No loaner gear will be available.
The archery range marshals are still observing deserving, enthusiastic, courteous new archers in need of archery gear as recipients of the two fine bows donated by Elk Ridge Archery.

Thrown Weapons
The Champion’s Tournament between the East and allies and Middle and allies was held Monday. 24 throwers participated, 12 per side. The high score was recorded by Joe the Just of the Middle with the second highest score going to Gavin McBane of the East. The throw consisted of two targets with three throws each of axe, knife, and spear. The Middle and allies won with a total score of 220 to 215 for the East and allies.
For Wednesday three throws were planned: 9 am, Estrogen and Axes; 2:30, Two Handed Tourney; and 4 pm, Hecklers Tourney.

Dear Doctor Best,
I’m about to fight in Crown and I’m unsure who to ask to be my consort. I am including birth data for both my wife and mistress.
Thanks,
Hot Stick

Dear Stick,
Young man, I would be remiss if I failed to say I see turmoil and strife in your future. As you are a Leo with Venus in Scorpio, I know my words will be wasted on you, but regrets of my own misspent youth professional ethics move me to make the attempt regardless.
These charts show your wife would make the better queen but your mistress is prone to greater violence. You could eschew astrology and decide with your dowsing rod. You could introduce the two of them and ask their opinion. I will sell tickets, donating your half towards your medical bills.
Never fear, once the excitement of this upcoming crown draws to an end, you will be able to approach your next tournament with a clean slate.

Good Luck,
Doctor Best

Dear Doctor Best,
Who is going to win the war?
Signed,
Call Me Legion

Dear Legion,
You’d be amazed how many people have asked me this one. I’ve collected a great deal of data on this. It’s a complex problem, involving birthdates of the East and Middle kings, coronations, and of course the final piece of the puzzle, the cannon sounding the “birth” of the war itself. I was fairly confident I was equal to the task, until I saw the points rules for this year. That’s more complicated than astrology!
Nonetheless, I have my prediction in a sealed envelope, in the secure custody of the Pennsic Independent office. It would, of course, be unethical of me to publish the final results of the war ahead of time, as it would spoil the fun for everyone.

Do you have a question? Bring it to Dr Best’s office at Sun Baked Studio, on Battle Road. Whenever possible, include birth date, time, and place for all parties involved. Your identity will be held in strictest confidence. “Ask me any question, and I’ll give you any answer!”

Og on Manners

Good manners… Period or not period?
There is a class on this at Pennsic this year. I am sorry I will miss it. There are a lot of great classes. You are so lucky to be there. We have all seen the Henry VIII thing biting the turkey leg and throwing it over his shoulder while wiping his face on his sleeve. MYTH! The higher up you were on the royalty food chain, the more good manners were important. Needed. EXPECTED!
There are many books on manners that are period. They have rules like, “Do not blow your nose on the table cloth.” For there to be such a rule, someone had to be breaking it. People ate with their hip knife and a spoon they often carried with them.
Forks, as we all know, are late period. I'll use one anyway.
Barbarians ate with a sword. Knights ate with a dagger. Gentlemen ate with chopsticks. Leftovers were gathered and given to the poor. Bread was a big part of any meal. Many loaves per guest per remove.
Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
To good manners, period or not! Let’s do it anyway. Why? Because it would make our mothers proud! TO OUR MOTHERS.
Drink well
Drink often
Drink with…

Vipers!

By Johanna Ungulata

The Pennsic Independent has received warning of a great danger facing the populace of the Pennsic War. The Soothsayers of the Circus of the Damned have predicted that a swarm of vipers will plague the marketplace and food court, starting Tuesday morning. Based on the accuracy of their plague predictions in past years, we believe that the populace of Pennsic should make whatever preparations they can against this latest terror.
Rania Iskremorova of the Circus of the Damned warns, “The signs are all in place for a huge number of deadly vipers to invade the marketplace and food court areas starting on Tuesday morning. They will be small, quick, and newly hatched, and we believe that the children of Pennsic will be best equipped to capture them. Their boundless energy and nimble fingers will make catching these vipers a simple task. Adults will have much more difficulty handling these beasts. They should step aside and leave this problem to the kids.”
The PI has confirmed that the creatures do exist. Johan Cervus, Pennsic’s Animal Control Officer, told PI reporters, “We’re not sure where they came from, but they’re definitely heading toward the marketplace. They seem to be particularly hostile when approached by adults; the only specimens we have in captivity were caught by children.”
Lord Cervus has made this plea to the children, “Although it may be dangerous, I need to ask every child to scan the roads and pathways of the food court and marketplace to try to locate and capture one of these vipers and turn it in to the Circus of the Damned during the Children’s Fete on Wednesday between 1-4 pm. The best thing we can do is keep these creatures separated, so each child should only try to capture ONE VIPER.”
The Circus of the Damned has negotiated with the Kingdom of Æthelmearc to create a protected Snake Sanctuary, so that the captured creatures can live out the rest of their lives in peace and prosperity. King Maynard and Queen Liaidain of Sylvan Æthelmearc were pleased to be able to care for these creatures and proclaimed, “As it is Our duty to protect all creatures within Our lands, We shall ensure suitable space is available for the proposed Snake Sanctuary.”
Every child who captures a viper and turns it in at the Children’s Fete will be rewarded with a Royal Commendation signed by several of the visiting monarchs, as well as a prize from the Circus of the Damned. Any child not finding a viper on Tuesday in the marketplace is requested to please come to the Children’s Fete in the barn on Wednesday to help keep the creatures contained. While the members of the Circus of the Damned are fine entertainers, they are somewhat lacking in their zoo-keeping skills and will need all the help they can get while they prepared these feisty critters for the move to their new home.

Juggling Babies at Pennsic

By Dame TSivia bas Tamara v’Amberview
Features Reporter – Pennsic Independent

One baby at War can be a challenge, two can be a handful-plus. However, how do you handle FOUR children under four years of age? That is the question asked of Lori and Dave, Atlantia’s own Bee People. Behind their delightful booth full of beeswax, honey, and other goodies, is a playpen filled with Arthur, Brannon, and Charles, three identical one-year old baby boys. Their 3 1/2 year old daughter Rowan can be found holding onto Grandma Billie or Grandpa Chuck’s hand.

Mother Lori has been keeping bees for thirteen years, originally as part of way to supplement the family food bill while she was a graduate student. Her garden did not flourish until she realized that the flowers were not being pollinated. That meant putting in some bees. Bees became a hobby, and ultimately her full-time business since 2006.

But how do you get anything done with a swarm of babies at hand? Apparently this is quite a skill set, one which mom Lori is still polishing. Despite her best intentions, it takes approximately six hours to ready her triplets, Rowan, mom, and dad, to get to their sales booth daily. There are bottles to be given, diaper bags to be readied, breakfast for the older family members, and so forth. Lori is quite insistent that none of this could be accomplished without the support of her parents (who have moved in with the couple) and their squad of highly qualified and dedicated staff at the Bee Folks booth.

Lori says that Pennsic is a “different experience than I thought it would be”, but that she is enjoying the quality time with the boys that Pennsic offers her. At home she works up to 14 hours a day in her office on her bee business. Passersby comment “you’re much braver than I am”, or offer her ”condolences” on wrangling three identical little boys at once. She was also given an “authorization card” indicating that the triple stroller is an authorized War-weapon.

One of the most fun things about the boys is when they all peer out of a tent at once, reminiscent of a pint-size Monty Python and the Holy Grail moment. Although the couple do not have much garb for the babies, people have been bringing donations of baby tunics and such for them. Other than for shock value or for photos, Lori says they prefer to not dress the babies identically.

Thankfully big sister Rowan interacts well with her baby brothers. She is not fond of having her picture taken with the boys, but does like to play with them.

As mom Lori points out, naturally-occurring triplets (not via IVF) happen in approximately 1 in 200 million pregnancies, so if you see the family and its über-stroller out and about, say hello to one of the rarest sights at Pennsic.

SHORT PEOPLE THROUGH HISTORY !

I’m Guilty. I’m Sorry. I, like many, see a huge Neanderthal armor up and walk onto a field and I say, "Wow.” I see a skinny five foot nothing enter the field with two sticks and I go " - "
I am a fool. The Neanderthal is a nothing and dies soon. The five footer has been fighting and winning tourneys for decades.
Like I said, I am a fool. No big surprise there. Life in the middle ages, as we all know, was hard and cruel. For a dwarf…I use the term for it that they did…it was ten times worse. They were kept by royals as almost pets, toys, entertainment. They were collected and traded. They became fools and jesters, pimps and food tasters. They were used as pages and messengers.
Most were not handicapped or mentally disabled in any way and soon became advisers, counselors, ambassadors and even spies. A few were knighted and at least one was a duelist.
Away from the royals, life was still not easy. But there were still short businessmen, farmers, even clergy plying their trades . Records show some ran ale houses and inns, often teaming up with a giant, an odd couple to say the least.
Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
To those giants around us who are short of stature, men or women, we are still forced to look up to you.

Venerating Obscure Saints at Pennsic

Dame TSivia bas Tamara v’Amberview
Features Reporter – Pennsic Independent

Sunday near the barn, passers-by were treated to a scene of revelers celebrating two most obscure saints, courtesy Baron Foote and Baroness Grainne of Feat of Clay potters. According to Baron Foote, the Saints Marg and Rita were apparently totally unknown until someone found an obscure reference to them in the Winchester Chronicles. The good Baron reports that there was a mini-heat wave in the south of what is now England somewhere around 95,000 B.C., and early Christian nuns who came from the south of France to the shores around Land’s End brought with them crops including both grapes and cacti (which were only viable due to said heat wave).
Foote reports that no one appears sure why the cacti were raised, but the chronicles indicate a great storm swept across the south coast, which ruined the crop with horrific tidal waves. Folklore indicates that two identical twin sisters who were from that nunnery, Marg and Rita, died trying to defend the cacti plantation, and were never seen again.
It was at that time that the miracle of Saints Marg and Rita occurred, for after the storm had buffeted the crop to a pulp, the nuns discovered a green liquid in low-lying areas with salt encrusted from the ocean’s attack. The liquid was found to be fine and delectable, and the salt merely improved its savor. And so the sacred liquor from this miraculous disaster became the sacrament ingested by true believers to honor the memory of holy twins Marg ‘n Rita.
Foote and Grainne have held the festival of Saints Marg ‘n Rita for nine years now, with “stagger posts” supplied by Rod, Pole and Perch, the Royal Surveyors. With highly skilled devotees such as their wench squad (Spanner, Wrench, Adjustable, and Crescent), the festivities helped put a smile on the face of commoner and Royal alike. Many quaked in fear at their sacred “Dickie Bird”, a huge carved wood bird with a tongue that moves in and out. The Dickie Bird is apparently an Anglo-Saxon raven, whose tongue is meant to remove any excess salt on worshippers’ faces, should they have walked too close to the sea.
How did all this prayerful play start? Apparently Foote and Grainne were sitting one night looking at the lovely Pennsic sunset and thought it would be a perfect time and place for a Margarita. Before long their “Anglo-Saxon patio” had become the venue for prayerful worship at Pennsics.
Long may the miracle of Saints Marg and Rita continue to grace the Anglo-Saxon patio!
