Monday’s Event Points: East Tygers 3, Midrealm Dragons 2
War Points: East Tygers 1, Midrealm Dragons 0
With the Midrealm winning the rapier champions’ tournament and the East claiming the archery champions’ point, Sunday’s War Point would be determined on the heavy fighting lists.
Unbelted Champions’ Battle
The always-explosive Unbelted Champions’ Battle took the field first, as 45 warriors of the Midrealm faced 45 warriors of the East in a last-man-standing affair.
At the sound of “Lay on!” both sides spread their forces across the field and into each other. However, the Midrealm had more success in reforming its ranks after the initial charge. These blocks of Dragon fighters were able to roll over the field and claim a decisive win for the Midrealm, keeping the sword of honor in the Midrealm’s camp for another year.
Belted Champions Battle
Having seen their unbelted brethren claim victory, the Midrealm looked to claim its first win in the Belted Champions Battle in more than a decade.
Again, both sides charged into each other and, this time, the fight was a battle of attrition.
Both sides looked like they might snatch victory, but a few Tyger knights were able to avoid the main brawl and stay together, taking down the surviving Midrealm warriors. The East once again claimed the point.
Allied Champions Battle
The allies of the East and Midrealm returned to stage one of the most rollicking battles of the war. A force of 89 Eastern allies and 89 Midrealm allies did battle in an hour-long SCA-style game of capture the flag. Resurrections were allowed at two- and three-minute intervals.
The East’s allies dominated the early proceedings, capturing the Midrealm allies’ flag at 4:36 and 13:36. However, the Midrealm allies rallied with two captures at 19:38 and 28:24.
With the scores tied at halftime (the 30-minute mark), the two armies switched sides on the field. The Eastern allies dominated the second half, scoring captures at 35:23, 38:04, 43:49 and 50 minutes. The final score was 6-2, giving the East the event point.

For the Pennsic Independent
A Pennsic favorite took the stage five minutes early Saturday night at the Arts and Sciences stage, before a packed house and a crowd that was already raring to go.
After casually chatting with audience members, Duke Moonwulf (Michael Longcor) grabbed his guitar, leapt to the stage and asked, “Anyone care if we start early?” The crowd’s roar of approval needed no interpretation. The entertainer welcomed his audience into the show by opening with “Dance a Little Dance.”
After the first set, Duke Moonwulf, in his own grand tradition, announced the previously unknown beneficiary of funds raised at this year’s concert: The Memorial Fund for Duchess Arielle of Atlantia, who recently passed away. Money raised will go toward the lingering medical and other expenses her family has incurred. The proverbial hat was passed, and the audience responded with enthusiasm to the exceedingly worthy cause.
For an hour, Duke Moonwulf, his drummer and dancers, continued to enchant an audience of loyal fans who sang right along. At one point he asked, “So I hear you got some rain? … No, you didn’t.” Then, Duke Moonwulf regaled the audience with the classic musical tale of Pennsic IV, which saw nine inches of rain in three days.
Duke Moonwulf sent his enthusiastic audience off with a lullaby sure to endear itself to mothers everywhere, in which the singer promises the child that the demons under the bed would surely “eat him up.” With that, Duke Moonwulf left his audience smiling and cheerful and undeterred by tales of treacherous demons.

I am a Northman, one of the "Men of the Uplands". I have family in Greenland, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Constantinople and many, MANY other places. My wife, sons, and I have a small farm with some sheep. My wife brews mead. I do blacksmithing. My father sits on council. It is a hard life. We do not have much.
The Irish call us Gaill, “foreigners”. Franks call us Normanni: “northmen”. Germans refer to us as Ashmen. Spanish Arabs call us Majus, “heathens”. Anglo-Saxons call us Danes. The Slavs and Byzantine Greeks call us Rus,’ which later would become the word for “Russian”.
My Webster’s tells me Viking can be a noun or a verb. "Any of the Scandinavian pirates of the 8th to 10th centuries" it says. Another dictionary tells me it is “the act of raiding”, giving us the phrase “To go a-viking.” Another definition says, “a label given to a Scandinavian people of a certain era.” My world history book says the original definition is "creek-men." My atlas finds no Viking land.
We have worked as mercenaries and private guards. When need for money is great, my brothers and I get out the boats and go raiding. WE GO A-VIKING! It is very profitable.
Lords and Ladies!
Charge your glasses and raise them high!
To Vikings, Northmen, or whatever you wish to call us. And if I may be so bold, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”
