Mommy, I Want to Grow Up to be a Knight

Since we are at a war, everyone knows there is always some kind of a fight or sparring match for the adults to participate in or watch. However, some of you may not know what is available for the kids who want to join the adults in bringing honor to their kingdoms. Youth combat activities are available throughout the War.
Youth combat has been available in many kingdoms for over ten years and has been growing in popularity every year. Last Pennsic, over 150 kids from ages 6 to 17 participated in the youth combat and this year the number is expected to top 200.
Up until recently, each kingdom was allowed to establish their own rules and requirements for youth combat. However, now that the majority of kingdoms offer youth combat programs and considering the size of the Pennsic youth combat events, the SCA Board of Directors has appointed a Society Deputy Earl Marshal for Youth Combat. This new position was established to gather information from all the kingdoms’ youth combat programs and develop Society-wide set of standards and rules.
This war’s youth combat is being overseen by the Middle Kingdom marshal, The Honorable Lord Nyilas Kazmer, who is being aided by Mistress Jenna MacPherson of Lion’s Tower of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc. Together, they have arranged fighting practice for the youths every morning at 7:30 AM by the Pennsic University tent beside the battlefield in addition to a growing list of events and classes.
During these practices, the children are taught basic forms and put through exercises to help them hone their skills. They regularly do bridge battles and have even engaged in an exercise that mimics the Storming of La Rochelle. Three youths are given a point to defend against the rest of the group who have unlimited resurrections. The groups of three are rotated around to see which group can hold out the longest. Tips and techniques are taught along the way so by the time these youths are old enough to join the adults, they will already be veterans in terms of tactics and experience.
In addition to lessons in combat rules, form and tactics, the youth combat marshals teach chivalry. After each practice, the fields are walked by all the youths to pick up any trash or equipment. Good sportsmanship is encouraged and it is common for the victors to take the time to give tips to their opponents. These youths want a good challenge and make sure they can get that by helping others to improve.
Among the youth offerings are classes in weapon making and a bear pit tourney. Adult fighters are encouraged to participate in helping the youths train with a Tag Team Tourney available on Tuesday at 3 PM. This tourney will be a team tourney. Each team will have one adult fighter and one youth fighter. On Wednesday, from 7 PM and 9 PM, will be A Night With Knights. Knights of the Society will be available to work with the youths to help them improve and share wisdom. Though, from what I have seen and heard of these youth fighters, some knights and fighters may be showing up to check out future competition. Youth fighters that have progressed through the program and are, now, fighting with the adults have turned heads and there are plenty more out on the youth combat fields that will be giving current knights a real challenge in future wars.
Now for the fun part: how to get your child involved. At this point, the youth combat program for Pennsic has taken the rules of the East Kingdom, Middle Kingdom and Æthelmearc and has established a set of rules made up of the lowest common denominators of the three programs. The minimum a child needs to come and play is to be at least six years old. For equipment, each child must have a helmet, a gorget (neck protection), groin protection (can be a heavy skirt or kilt), cloth gloves and pads or one layer of cloth over the elbows and knees. Weapons are boffer style (golf tubes or PVC pipes with padding).
The children are split up into three age groups with the blow and armor calibration increasing with age. Division one is 6 to 9 and is touch only. Division two is 10 to 13. Division three is 14 to 17 and, though they still use boffer weapons, they have the option of participating in battles using rattan weapons.
This is a great program that teaches children how to fight with honor and how to build their own weapons and armor. It is also good for helping to wear out the kids since it is one of the few places in Pennsic where running around and screaming is not only encouraged but expected.

The 11th annual Storming of La Rochelle
The rapier community kicked off the melees at Pennsic XL with the Storming of La Rochelle Saturday morning. This annual heavy rapier and rubber-band gun brawl took place at the Pennsic Fort. About 200 rapier fighters took part in this year’s battle.
The sides were split into those with orange tape and those without. The attacking side was given unlimited resurrections, while the defending side was given one resurrection. The side that could hold the fort longer would win.
The Orange horde was given the chance to defend the fort first. The Orange warriors managed to deny the attackers the first time it attempted to set its petard with a well-placed gunshot. However, the Non-Orange attackers managed to set their petard on the main gate on their second attempt, causing the fort to shake with an earth-shattering kaboom.
With the doors blown, the Non-Orange force sent a steady wave of fighters crashing into the kill pocket inside the fort. It took multiple charges to break the combined forces of Atlantia and the Midrealm in the center, but once it was done, the end was soon in coming.
Attacking forces from the main fell upon the East’s warriors at the west sally point and drove them back to the middle of the field. The final Orange warrior fell at the 7:15 mark.
After the sides switched places, the Orange warriors set a plan in motion where they initially feinted sending most of their warriors to the sally point. While this allowed a small force of Orange warriors to quickly set their petard on the main gate, the move did not prove decisive.
After a second earth-shattering kaboom, the Non-Orange warriors kept a tight kill pocket, which repulse charge after charge. Elements from Brendoken, Æthelmearc, Wednesday Company and later the Thieves of Hearts kept the Orange warriors in check for at least 10 minutes.
Attrition eventually allowed the Orange warriors to break out and chase the remaining Non-Orange warriors into the towers, where the final warriors fell. However, the Non-Orange warriors had lasted 14:30, giving them the victory.
A final fight then took place, pitting the White Scarves/Bronze Rings/Kingdom Champions of rapiers vs. the rest of the Known World. This fight was a real battle of attrition, as the Known World fighters had to ferret out the White Scarves from every nook and cranny.
The Scarves made their stand at the west tower, where they slowly ground their opponents down. Eight Scarves emerged victorious at the 26:18 mark, having held on despite determined resistance.

Known World Novice Tournament
The Chivalry of the Known World, in honor of the late Count Sarnac of Ba’adur, hosted the Known World Novice Tournament on the red list Saturday morning.
A total of 68 fighters with less than two years of fighting experience entered the tournament. The tournament was comprised of eight shark pools with the top two fighters in each pool advancing to the next round. Two more shark pools then took place to determine the finalists.
The finalists included John the Breeder Davies of the East and Darlan of the Wood from Æthelmearc. Darlan bested John in two straight fights to claim the title.
Tarl’s Little Polearm Tournament
In celebration of what they call “The One True Weapons Form,” THL Tarl and the Shire of Hunter’s Home hosted Tarl’s Little Polearm Tournament Saturday afternoon on the blue list.
The tournament consisted of four bear pits where each victory earned a fighter two points and each loss counted for one point. As is tradition, every one of the 60 fighters in the tournament walked away with a prize.
At the tournament’s end, Count Edward the Red of Ealdormere won the tournament with 67 points. However, in a final best-of-three bouts fight with THL Tarl, it was Tarl who emerged victorious 2-1.

Second Generation Tournament
The Kingdom of Lochac hosted the second annual Second Generation Tournament Saturday on the red list. Nine second-generation SCAdians from throughout the Known World, often accompanied by their parents as inspiration, fought in this round-robin affair.
The finals turned into a prince vs. prince fight, as HRH Quilliam of Ealdormere did battle with Prince Miles Fitz Ranuf from the Principality of the Mists. HRH Quilliam won the final fight with two straight victories.
Also, Einar of Cynnabar was recognized as the most valorous fighter, while Raymond of the Two Baronies was honored as most chivalrous.

Lost Boys Kamikaze Battle
The Boys were back in town Saturday as the Lost Boys hosted their annual Kamikaze Battle at the Pennsic Fort. This fight-all-you-want event saw fighters join in from throughout the Known World participate. Many acts of fighting brilliance took place — particularly from Dirkam McWard of Clan O’Niall.
After 90 minutes of unlimited resurrections, the red army and white army met a final time in last-man-standing brawl. The white army would emerge victorious as forces from Drachenwald rolled the field from the south.

Ealdormere 10-Man Unbelted Tournament
Under the setting sun Saturday, the Kingdom of Ealdormere hosted its annual 10-Man Unbelted Tournament.
Four teams represented their respective kingdoms in this round-robin affair, which traditionally is one of the best-loved fights at Pennsic.
It was the team from Atlantia that claimed the title this year, going 3-0 in the round robin. Æthelmearc (2-1), Ealdormere (1-2) and the Midrealm (0-3) also participated.

Two further notes concerning martial issues:
First, the Midrealm Archery Corps is offering loaner bows so all Midrealm citizens can shoot in the populace archery War Points. Forresters Merlin and Greybarr and Uncle Jack have provided two adult bows and three children’s bows for use. Check in at Midrealm Royal for availability.
Second, Sir Osgkar of the East and a set of distinguished fighters from throughout the Known World will hold the field on Wednesday from 2 to 6 PM as a charity benefit for Mikkel the Builder of Dragonshiphaven. Mikkel was injured in a motorcycle accident and donations from the event will help defray his medical costs. Sir Osgkar asked a $5 donation, which will be good for five single-combat bouts.

The BoD Wants to Hear From YOU!

The inner workings of the SCA Board of Directors remain a mystery to many SCAdians, even as late in the game as Pennsic XL. Fortunately, the members of the Board are eager to change that.
The Board holds a town hall meeting every year at Pennsic in an effort to be accessible and gain feedback from the populace. This year’s meeting will be held in AS10 on Tuesday, August 9 from 1-3 PM. SCA Chair Leslie Vaughn will be flying to Cooper’s Lake specifically to attend this session.
Corporate officers, Society officers and Board members will be present at the meeting and ready to answer questions from the populace about any issue within the Board’s purview. Some topics expected to come up are matters of SCA governance such as e-newsletters, membership fees, the recent SCA census, coming changes to the organization, and the growing advocacy in some kingdoms to allow same-sex consorts. However, any question may be raised.
“This is a real way to talk to the BoD and get instantaneous feedback,” said Board member Tim Jennings, (Master Garraed Galbraith, OL,) who began his three-year term earlier this year. Many SCA members assume that the Board are aware of all that is transpiring on kingdom email lists, and do not realize that there are only seven Board members and three permanent staff to do all the top-level management work of the Society. “I think a lot of people assume somebody else has written in or that we’ve clearly heard about it and are dealing with it.” In fact, a posting to a kingdom or baronial list is unlikely to reach the Board members, who are eager to hear directly about matters requiring their attention. Decision-making priorities are set partly by how much email is received on a topic.
“There are a lot of myths about what Corpora does or does not say,” Jennings said. He added that the Board would welcome a chance to address those questions.
One of the persistent myths is that one must be a lawyer—or an accountant—or a peer—or an expert in medieval history—to become a member of the Board. In fact, any SCA member may be nominated or may nominate himself or herself. But be warned: in accordance with the law governing non-profit corporations, the job is unpaid.
Any SCA participant wishing to communicate with a member of the Board of Directors may email their kingdom ombudsman, listed on sca.org/BOD/, or may send a message on any subject to comments@sca.org. To apply to join the Board, contact Tim Jennings at tjennings@director.sca.org. The Board has recently adopted the target of a 48-hour turnaround time on all emails received.
And supposing that 300 people turn up on Tuesday afternoon and try to squeeze into AS 10? Jennings beamed. “We’ll move! We would love to have that problem.”
