Monday Battlefield Report

By DonalBane of Blakmers

Battlefield Reporter for the Pennsic Independent

Unbelted Champions Battle

The annual unbelted champions brawl was a best of three fights affair this year, which was fought on the west side of the battlefield. Cheering crowds from both the Midrealm and the East made for a noisy backdrop.

In each fight, the Midrealm champions attacked from the south and the East champions attacked from the north. The first fight saw both units split at the outset and break off in the small engagements. The East’s forces were able to slowly overwhelm the Dragon and the East won the first fight.

The Dragon’s supporters roared their encouragement to the their troops for the second fight and its champions responded. The bulk of the Midrealm force stayed compact in the center and bulldozed through the heart of the Eastern forces. With the Tyger forces scattered, the Midrealm stayed together and hunted down the remnants to win the second fight.

With the atmosphere at fever pitch for the third fight, the two forces met again and barreled into each other like demons. However, it was the East who seemed to get the better of the initial charge and slowly ground down the Dragon’s forced to win the fight and the War Point for the Tyger.

Both HRM Felix and HRM Brion both complimented the fighters for a well-fought battle. In keeping with tradition, the Midrealm’s unbelted captain presented HRM Brion with a sword to be held until next year’s battle.

Sir TJ’s 30th Anniversary Polearm Tournament

Sir Tojeneraum of Atlantia hosted a polearm-only tournament in honor of his 30th anniversary of being knighted at Pennsic V. Fifteen fighters joined in the double elimination tournament, which was fought using Atlantian conventions for polearm.

The finals of the tournament was fought between a pair of Atlantians as Sir Vladimir Ivanovich Aleksandrov faced Lord Philip ap Griffith. Sir Vladimir best Lord Philip in two straight fights to claim his second victory in a polearm tournament this war.

Ninth A&S Exhibition Displays Wonders of the Known World

By Ursula the Widow

For the Pennsic Independent

On Monday morning, the Barn was filled with 200 artisans and the products of their inspiration. Baroness Catriona MacDuff of the East Kingdom organized the Pennsic A&S Exhibition for the ninth consecutive year.

A stunning variety of cultural riches met the eye. The fiber arts were heavily represented in all possible forms, including sewing, knitting and naalbinding, lace making, embroidery, spinning, weaving, and dyeing. Wood and metal work, jewelry, and musical instruments represented the crafts of the hand. Scribes, illuminators and cartographers showed their scrolls and drawings. Poems and plays, wines and meads, and song appeared.

The event is a display, not a competition, and there is no requirement to be a Laurel or apprentice to take part, although many did. The organizers encourage all to display the products of their talents. “We’re very grateful that the artists of the Known World come and display because the stuff is incredible,” Baroness Catriona said. “It’s very special that the medieval arts are not being lost.”

She also expressed great appreciation for her technical crew, who had arisen at 5:30 in order t6o have the Barn set up and ready for the exhibitors.

Mistress Nerak la Tisserande, O.L., of Meridies displayed a range of garments including three knitted full-length cotehardies. Although she cannot document knitted full garments, she maintains the lack of evidence comes from garments being raveled and the wool reused. She got the inspiration when an ice storm befell during an Ansteorra event. The use of knitting rather than weaving creates a much warmer, softer fabric from the same weight wool. Mistress Nerak’s gowns use a Fair Isle stranding technique and are strikingly beautiful with their patterns and colors.

More familiar-looking but equally exquisite were the matching Spanish riding habits, circa 1575, worn by Her Excellency Mistress Jalali of Salamis , O.L. and Lord Thomas de Latham of Ansteorra. Gwynhyfar, Mistress Jalali’s apprentice, created the rust and gold ensembles, ornamented with pearls, for the couple to wear during their SCA equestrian activities.

Duke Cariadoc of the Bow presented several stages of construction of a Merovingian lyre based upon the initial reports of the Trossigen find, the only lyre of that period extant.

Jehannic de Bordeu’s specimens of the brewer’s art included a rose hip wine, a dry still cider in the English style, and pyment, which she described as “a cross between wine and mead.” It is fermented from both honey and grapes.

Lord Guy Lourance, of the East, showed his maps of the Known World. He created two large world maps, one after the style of the Catalan Atlas in blue, red, black and white, and the other a Ptomlemaic map in black and white.

Tyger captures spoils from the Town

By DonalBane of Blakmers

Battlefield Reporter for the Pennsic Independent

After three War Points: East Tygers 2.5, Midrealm Dragons .5

The Great Armies of the Midrealm and East met for the first time this Pennsic on a perfect summer morning for the Town Battle.

This new grand melee was staged inside an elaborate structure of hay bales. The object of the battle was to acquire points either by capturing buildings, capturing relics and bringing them to their respective “temples” or by taking a large town relic to a “ship” a the northwest edge of the battlefield.

The Midrealm army entered the town from the south side and the Dragon’s forces got a boost when the Tuchux marched into their camp to start the battle. The Tuchux began the battle by entering the southwest entrance, along with forces from Ealdormere, Trimaris, other allied Kingdoms and the Free Company of Ironlance. The bulk of the Midrealm Army, spearheaded by the Darkyard Legion entered via the south entrance, along with elements of the Great Dark Horde. Also, the Dragon entrusted to the two “sally” points outside the town to Outlands, Calontir and Horde. Several Horde ballistae kept the sally point under fire.

The East entered the town from the eastern side. House Bloodguard spearheaded the East’s charge through the main east gate along with Æthelmearc and bulk of the East’s Southern and Central armies. At the northeast gate, Duchy Von DrachenKlaue spearheaded the charge with Atlantia and the Northern Army joining the fray. HRM Brion entrusted his allies with the sally points and later lauded their efforts.

The East got a bit of a jump on the Midrealm forces as the opening cannon sounded. The East’s main barreled straight through the center of the town, while the Midrealm forces were able to push along the southern flanks. The two corner forces met at the entrance to the ship’s dock, although the East’s force slowly pushed south throughout the battle.

According to the marshals, both Armies were able to seize their town relics — a Colossus foot for the Midrealm and a keg for the East. — but neither was able to get it to the ship.

Meanwhile, the battle developed into a long, diagonal line for most of its duration, though the lines slowly shifted as the East pushed south along the west flank and the Midrealm pushed north along the east flank.

After a general hold was called when one gentle had to be carted off the field, the East was able to send a late charge barreling in to the Midrealm’s southeast flank. The Tyger warriors nearly were on top of the south gate before a furious Midrealm countercharge pushed them back.

In the middle of that charge, however, the final cannon sounded. Although there was some cofusion about the final point count, the East emerged as the clear winner of the War Point, having captured most of the buildings and having put two relics in its temple.

HRM Brion was delighted with the efforts of this army.

“I think they preformed extremely well,” HRM Brion said. “Atlantia and Æthelmearc drew up a great plan and executed it well with Atlantia going over the top. I think the Midrealm fought very well. I saw some very good, hard fighting in this battle.”

HRM Felix also assembled his troops after the battle.

“I am very proud of you all,” HRM Felix told his troops. “We fought hard and we fought fairly.”

Today’s Big Battle: The Woods Battle

The only battle that traces its origin back to Pennsic I, the brawl in the forest will be two, one-hour resurrection battles this year fought over five banners.

What to watch for: Not much. Since non-combatants are forbidden from entering the woods, it’s tough to watch this battle. However, anyone who helps the water bearers at the resurrection points will be appreciated.
