You probably know that [Eislinn and I] were king and queen at Pennsic 16. She had contracted breast cancer when my son Brian was born. ... She went into remission and we thought everything was okay. And she wanted to be War Queen; she was Winter Queen the first time. She asked me to fight, and I won Crown Tournament.

Despotissa Heirusalem Crystoma has been working for Pennsic newspapers since Pennsic 21. Sadly, this year is her last, as she is stepping down as publisher and will not be returning to Pennsic. She asked me to tell her story, which I am honored to do—after all, my current career is thanks to her. It was because of my years of experience writing for the Independent that I now have a job as a journalist back home. I owe her this much at least.

Rapier Reporter, PI

Fifty-three rapier fighters entered the Novice Tourney. Entrance requirements were that fighters be authorized for less than 3 years, have no kingdom level rapier awards, and never have won a tournament. The tourney is run as a bear-pit, with losers leaving immediately and winners leaving after 5 wins. Everyone gets a prize in this tourney, with first place fencer choosing first.

Legendary individuals crowd Pennsic this year, but only one can lay claim to having fought in heavy combat at every Pennsic War. Baron Foscadh O’Dubhda, OP, of the Middle Kingdom, reminisced about his long experience during a sunny day of Peace Week from his camp overlooking the northwest corner of the battlefield.
